Subject: BUNDORAN Co Donegal From: GUEST,Travelling Man Date: 22 Jan 03 - 10:07 AM Going to use Bundoran Co Donegal as a base later this year, does anyone know anything about the area, where to go, what to see, the best bars, etc. |

Subject: RE: BUNDORAN From: TIA Date: 22 Jan 03 - 04:00 PM Go 'round the north side of the bay to see the fishing port in Killybegs, and hike the sea cliffs at Slieve League north of Teelin (they're even more impressive than those on Achill). Actually, there's no spot not worth seeing in Donegal. |

Subject: RE: BUNDORAN From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Jan 03 - 09:22 PM I thought the town of Bundoran was noisy and crowded, but the surrounding area is wonderful. Just walk on the bluffs along the seashore north of the tourist area, and you'll be in a quiet, beautiful world. I liked Sligo and Letterkenny a lot, too. There are travelling people who live in the parking lot of the cathedral in Letterkenny. That was my first encounter with them, and I found it very interesting. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: BUNDORAN From: daithi Date: 23 Jan 03 - 04:44 AM I was in Gleann Cholm Cille last year(about 5 miles from Teelin) and managed to get over to the pub run by the Altan family. There were great sessions in there, with the Grandma of the house (87, still smokin', still drinkin') singing sean-nós and dancing a step or two till 3 in the morning. Can't wait to go back...! (Agree about Bundoran though - a typical tacky seaside resort) Have a great time! Slán - Dáithí |

Subject: RE: BUNDORAN From: GUEST Date: 23 Jan 03 - 10:07 AM Sounds grand - but a bit of a trek from Gleann. I'll be over again in the summer, so maybe try to get to Gweedore on my way. Gó raibh míle maith agat! Dáithí |

Subject: RE: BUNDORAN From: TIA Date: 23 Jan 03 - 10:10 AM Travelling Man- Depending upon where you are from, please take the characterizations of Bundoran as a crowded or tacky place with a grain of salt. Several years ago on the way to Giant's Causeway we stayed in Portrush -- which is described by one travel guide as "...the cheesiest, tackiest resort town in all of the British Isles." Okay, it was not as pristine as much of Ireland, but to anyone who grew up in South Jersey (USA) and has seen Wildwood, Portrush was elegant by comparison. It's all perspective. |

Subject: RE: BUNDORAN From: GUEST,Travelling Man Date: 24 Jan 03 - 08:30 AM Tia, I'm with you on this one, I hail originally from Salford, Lancashire. Anywhere in Ireland, with the exception of the poorest parts of Dublin, Limerick etc is a world away from what I am used to. I have been to Ballyshannon, Donegal Town and Killybegs for a brief visit but did not have transport. There's very little you can do in October in two days without transport. Thus the original thread. |

Subject: RE: BUNDORAN From: GUEST,Frank Hamilton Date: 24 Jan 03 - 10:22 AM When my wife and I visited Bundoran, we went to a fascinating small club called "The Ballad Room". They did a lot of songs...many IRA-ish which undoubtably made waves in that part of the country. We were struck by a poster that showed a ski-masked man with a smoking rifle and the caption underneath was "Don't talk politics to anyone." This was some time ago. Frank |

Subject: RE: BUNDORAN From: Declan Date: 31 Jan 03 - 05:20 AM Bundoran itself is a typical seaside resort and as such I would definitely call it tacky. Its been ages since I was up around that area, so I can't give you much information that would be up to date. There are plenty of musician's based in Sligo, and I know there are sessions there most nights of the week. Dervish are a local band (to Sligo) and it might be worth having a look at their website for local session information. I've met some of them at sessions in Sligo Town, but they tend to be away touring most of the time. There are a number of nice pubs for sessions in Ballyshannon as well, but you'll have to enquire locally about which pubs have music which nights. Rossnowlagh is a nice seaside town just a bit up the coast from Bundoran, with a lovely beach. It hadn't been commercialised the last time I was there and was a nice quiet spot to visit. If you're looking for beaches you'll find plenty of nice ones in Donegal, but unforunately you don't always get weather to go with them. Also there's a lake called Lough Melvin not far from Bundoran. A drive around this lake will bring you across the border into Fermanagh at some points. I remember being very impressed by some of the views when driving with my parents around the area as a child. |

Subject: RE: BUNDORAN From: GUEST,local resident Date: 27 Jan 06 - 09:18 AM it is true to say that proir to the turn of the millinium that bundoran was a tacky extremly tacky and dirty place. however many local business men and councilers have invested millions. the McEniff family are currently building a new extension to the allingham hotel which was already a thriving business. added to this the family owns and runs the great norhtern hotel (4 star), the holyrod, macks amusments, bootlegers etc.. other familys such as the barrett family have also invested greatly.with the grand central hotel and the Slieve league hotel, apartments such as marine court and sea spray.the oconnel and barrett families have also build a new 6 screen cinema which is one of the best in the area.other groups have built a number of apartments and houses also. this shows how bundoran is changing. their are also plans for 2 shopping complexs due to start soon.with names like supervalue coming to the town for the first time. the town is growing and it will contiue to. |
