Subject: 400 Jazz standards From: C-flat Date: 22 Jan 03 - 09:42 AM Just came across this site and, although not related to blues or folk, I know that there are a number of jazz fans who frequent these pages so I thought it may be of interest. All the chords are shown along with the lyrics and most of the "standards" are there. C-flat. |

You might also like to look at: The Guitar Guy Online Jazz Songbook Gadjo drom (if you don't mind a Django influenced French site) You can also do a web search for +RealBook+jazz and you'll find a whole load of sites with either image or midi versions of real books. He could play about any standard jazz tune. We would usually play without rehearsing, all he needed to know was the key. One of the songs we did first was the "One Note Samba" which I would start by playing just one note on the first strain. Before we started I would say, "I don't know how to play jazz but I told Charlie I'd play with him if I only had to play one note!" Charlie played with Django and he had some great stories about his life. Charlie passed away recently. I miss him. -Richie |

It has all the bare bones basic changes without any alterations or substitutions. The Django site is interesting in the way they block out their chord progressions. They tend to use half-diminished designations instead of minor seventh flat fives. The Jazz Online apparently needs a PDF file or it gets into ABC which is OK I guess. I find ABC really cumbersome but if I use it more often, it might become easier. The Vanilla book is useful in that you can employ substitutions for the basic chords and learn how to do that. For example, in the tune Cherokee, Ralph uses Bb7 |Bb7 |Bb7 |Bb7aug and the substitutions would be Bb7 |F7+ |Fm9 |Bb13 Bb13b9 So it's instructive to see how the subs fit. "River : The Joni Letters"... all Joni Mitchell songs performed by primo musicians, including Wayne Shorter and Dave Holland... some quality vocals as well... just thought I'd mention this...... |
