Subject: 400 Jazz standards From: C-flat Date: 22 Jan 03 - 09:42 AM Just came across this site and, although not related to blues or folk, I know that there are a number of jazz fans who frequent these pages so I thought it may be of interest. All the chords are shown along with the lyrics and most of the "standards" are there. C-flat. |

Subject: RE: 400 Jazz standards From: GUEST,MCP Date: 22 Jan 03 - 07:24 PM I've had the Vanilla Songbook in my bookmarks for a year or so now, but it's just one of a lot of sites with chords for jazz standards. You might also like to look at: The Guitar Guy Online Jazz Songbook Gadjo drom (if you don't mind a Django influenced French site) You can also do a web search for +RealBook+jazz and you'll find a whole load of sites with either image or midi versions of real books. Subject: RE: 400 Jazz standards From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 22 Jan 03 - 11:38 PM Thank you folks....MCP especially.
Some jazz progressions are particularly elusive, it is far from simple folk, but this is grand stuff you've posted.
Sincerely, |

Subject: RE: 400 Jazz standards From: Richie Date: 23 Jan 03 - 08:56 AM I'm not a jazz player but when Charlie Byrd played here, he would invite me to play a set with him. He could play about any standard jazz tune. We would usually play without rehearsing, all he needed to know was the key. One of the songs we did first was the "One Note Samba" which I would start by playing just one note on the first strain. Before we started I would say, "I don't know how to play jazz but I told Charlie I'd play with him if I only had to play one note!" Charlie played with Django and he had some great stories about his life. Charlie passed away recently. I miss him. -Richie |

Subject: RE: 400 Jazz standards From: GUEST,Frank Hamilton Date: 23 Jan 03 - 10:33 AM MPC Thanks so much for these great sites! The Vanilla book is a great way for beginners to start playing jazz. It has all the bare bones basic changes without any alterations or substitutions. The Django site is interesting in the way they block out their chord progressions. They tend to use half-diminished designations instead of minor seventh flat fives. The Jazz Online apparently needs a PDF file or it gets into ABC which is OK I guess. I find ABC really cumbersome but if I use it more often, it might become easier. The Vanilla book is useful in that you can employ substitutions for the basic chords and learn how to do that. For example, in the tune Cherokee, Ralph uses Bb7 |Bb7 |Bb7 |Bb7aug and the substitutions would be Bb7 |F7+ |Fm9 |Bb13 Bb13b9 So it's instructive to see how the subs fit. Thanks again for these great sites. Frank |

Subject: RE: 400 Jazz standards From: number 6 Date: 04 Nov 07 - 12:11 AM Much Thanks C-flat. It's a great site. Taken back a bit by 'All Blues', much easier than what I've tried, and a little bit less dimension but I guess that's why it's called 'vanilla' ... but then again these provide a good root to start with. biLL |

Subject: RE: 400 Jazz standards From: bankley Date: 04 Nov 07 - 08:26 AM If you want to hear a really fine 'jazz' approach to 'folk'... listen to the recent release by Herbie Hancock. "River : The Joni Letters"... all Joni Mitchell songs performed by primo musicians, including Wayne Shorter and Dave Holland... some quality vocals as well... just thought I'd mention this...... |

Subject: Lyr Add: COCKTAILS FOR TWO (Johnston/Coslow) From: Jim Dixon Date: 20 May 15 - 01:39 AM I've known this song since I was a kid, from the playing of Spike Jones and His City Slickers, who did a rather perverted adaptation of this jazz standard, adding comical sounds in his customary style, but sticking to the words "as is." Listening to it again recently, it dawned on me: this is a celebration of the end of prohibition! COCKTAILS FOR TWO Words and music by Arthur Johnston and Sam Coslow, ©1934. Oh, what delight to Be given the right to Be carefree and gay once again! No longer slinking, Respectably drinking Like civilized ladies and men! No longer need we miss A charming scene like this: In some secluded rendezvous That overlooks the avenue With someone sharing a delightful chat Of this and that And cocktails for two— As we enjoy a cigarette To some exquisite chansonette, Two hands are sure to slyly meet beneath The serviette With cocktails for two. My head may go reeling, but my heart will be obedient, With intoxicating kisses for the principal ingredient. Most any afternoon at five, We'll be so glad we're both alive; Then maybe fortune will complete her plan That all began With cocktails for two. |
