COGAR MOGAR

Éist liom go fóill, a mhuirnín ó,
And hear my story true,
Bíonn daoine 'rá 's ag trácht gach lá
That I'm in love with you;
Gurb é do ghlór ró-bhinn, a stór,
My theme by night and day.
Ó ní 'neosfainn féin gur fíor an scéal,
But that's what people say.

Dá bhfaighinnse cáil is clú gan smal,
And acres broad and free,
Dá bhfaighinnse ór is ard onóir
And ships up on the sea,
B'fhearr liom ná iad, a rún mo chroí,
Your smile to light my way,
Gach uile lá, a mhíle grá,
Well that's what people say.

'S é deirtear fós, a chailín chóir,
That you have love for me;
'S dúirt bean 'nné go ndúirt bean léi
That you my bride will be.
A rún mo chléibh, a chuid den saol,
My light and hope always;
Ó, cuir do lámh im' láimh, a ghrá,
And say what people say.

From Cuisle an Cheoil published in Dublin by An Roinn Oideachais (Dept of Education) in 1976. earlier source: Ár gCeol Fáinig published in Dublin by Longman, Brown and Nolan. I don't recall hearing this light macaronic (bilingual song) and don't know of recordings of it.

Translation to monolingual English:

HUGGER MUGGER (the whispers going about)

Listen a while, my darling, and hear my story true,
Every day people are saying that I'm in love with you;
That your so sweet voice, my dear, is my theme by night and day.
Oh, I don't know if the story is true, but that's what people say.

If I would gain unbesmirched renown, and acres broad and free,
If I would get gold and high honour and ships up on the sea,
Better than that would I prefer, love of my heart, your smile to light my way,
Every day, o [my] thousand loves, well that's what people say.

It is said dear girl that you have love for me;
And yesterday a woman said that a woman said to her that you my bride will be.
My darling, my share of the world, my light and hope always;
O, put your hand in mine, my love, and say what people say.

the lyrics are published also in Diarmaid Ó Muirithe, "An tAmhrán Macarónach". Dublin: An Clóchomhar, 1980, under the title "What the People Say". Ó Muirithe's source was Brian Ó hUigín, "The Voice of Banba"

I'd completely forgotten about this song.

Thanks Mudcat
