Subject: RE: BS: London Demo re £5 charge. Date when From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 Jan 03 - 03:42 PM I was up in Central London the other day. I kept on wishing they'd brought in that Congestion Charge earlier. Maybe a few extra exemptions might be in order, and arguing around the details might be appropriate - but the principle is dead right. A London with fewer cars driving around (and most of them with just the driver aboard - would be a million times better. And I was born and grew up in London, and any time I get up there I curse what the cars and the lorries have done to the place. Anyone who drives round Central London must be a masochist, a sadist, or both. |

Subject: RE: BS: London Demo re £5 charge. Date when From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 Jan 03 - 04:41 PM You don't actually get there any quicker in a car when there's gridlock. You just slow up the emergency vehicles like the ambulances. |

Subject: RE: BS: London Demo re £5 charge. Date when From: Roxanne Date: 17 Jan 03 - 04:57 PM i agree nothing wrong with the conjestion charge, other countries have tolls on their busiest roads, however if you work in the zones thay are appling it too then there should be exemptions, it's dear enough trying to live in or around London now without having to pay more money out. It's time somthing was done about conjestion, unfortunatly all it will do in push the parking out to the surrounding areas, Most people voted Ken Livingstone in 'The ordinary peoples man' so they can't moan about him just because he is trying to improve London. Give me the country /sea anyday, you can keep London, unforunatly thats where my work is so for now I have to stick with it, but £5 is a fair price to pay for the air to be a bit cleaner. |

Subject: RE: BS: London Demo re £5 charge. Date when From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 Jan 03 - 05:46 PM At present getting round by tube can be quick enough, but overcrowded, and of course there are parts of London which aren't served (though not in the area where the congestion charge applies), and the buses are held up by the cars. Fewer cars would mean the buses would be a more practical way of getting round. When I lived in Lndon we never had a car, just used public transport; and I'd never dream of taking a car into London. The drawback I see to the charge is that, for rich people, it'll just mean they have an easier life driving round, and the cost won't affect them significantly. If you have to have rationing, it shouldn't be by price. But that's how it's done these days. |
