Subject: are there any happy folk songs ??? From: GUEST,H Date: 25 Dec 02 - 05:58 AM There are lots of sad folk songs, there are quite a few humourous/funny folk songs, and parodies of course. There are are plenty of lively tunes. But the lively songs usually have a dark story (Rout of the Blues, Night Visitor) And the happy endings seem to have sad tunes (Matt Hyland, Bleacher Lassie of Kelvinhaugh) So are there any happy traditional folk songs ? In hope, H |

Skimming along on the surface of life never going in deeper. Someone once said the difference between tragedy and comedy is just the point at which the author decides to drop the curtain. |

Subject: RE: are there any happy folk songs ??? From: Allan C. Date: 25 Dec 02 - 08:46 AM Right on, McG. Drama is what made the songs memorable enough to have become traditional. But let us not forget that love songs contain their own brand of happiness. My personal favorite, for example, is Seven Daffodils. The happy bit in it is only implied. We presume that what is offered is deemed sufficient and that the singer and the intended recipient of the moonbeams and pillow of the pillow of piney boughs live happily ever after. |

From: Amos Date: 25 Dec 02 - 10:24 AM Zipadeedoodah Oh what a Beautiful Morning Three Jolly Coachmen Woody Knows Nothin But Pluckin' On the Bow Rolling In My Sweet Baby's Arms I am sure there are dozens of them, and there is nothing shallow about celebrating the positive side of life. There are plenty of shallow songs as well, both sad and joyful. For example, the 19th century produced hundreds of wussy parlor tunes which have been forgotten today because their sentiments were vapid or meretricious. But it is true that there are more sad and angry folk songs, I suppose, than happy ones. Sometimes the deep stuff isn't easily reached in other ways. A |

Subject: RE: are there any happy folk songs ??? From: Abby Sale Date: 25 Dec 02 - 10:25 AM Numerically, if not proportionately, there are many. Just thinking of ballads, endless happy-ending love songs where they do wed & live happily ever after (even if there is a death or two in the process).. Almost all the "broken token" songs, Banks o' Skene, Banks of Sweet Dundee, Canadee-i-o (usually) and several where young lovers elope and live through it. Plus countless songs where the battle is won (eg 8th of Jan) or the hero achieves or the devil is thwarted or the attempting murderer is slain or the husband sheds (or tames) the harridan wife or the wife agrees that sex is nice to include in the marriage or Wife proves how much more work she can do than scoffing He or the workers not properly paid but make a strong enough statement that they are happy about it anyway (eg, kill the boss) or all get drunk and have a good time (fire, funeral or not) or the shephard wins his bet and a new suit of clothes or the whale gets caught or Rake gets laid and takes Whore's money, too (happy for him) or Whore takes all Rake's money (happy for her or rape is cleverly averted or Lulu seems happy... Lulu had a baby, Born on Christmas day Washed it's head in brandy, Called it Henry Clay. Oh, endless happy folk songs, even ignoring the 10's of thousands of trad. silly, playparty, work and drinking songs. But, referring further to the ()famous "happy?" file, one also finds this reference for today: AP News report for 12/25/1929--Walnut Grove, No. Carolina: "Becoming suddenly insane, a Stokes County farmer today slew his wife and six children and, after having laid them out for burial, went into a patch of woods and killed himself" It was on last Christmas evening The snow was on the ground At his home in North Carolina The miner he was found. "The Story of Charlie Lawson" Country Gentlemen, Folkways FA2709 Well, maybe that's not quite so happy a song but it does come from the "happy?" file. |

Subject: RE: are there any happy folk songs ??? From: *daylia* Date: 25 Dec 02 - 10:29 AM Right on Dave! Life's really got only one guarantee - and that's death! And maybe taxes too ... So it's up to each of us to choose HOW we look at life, to find a way to turn difficulties into advantages, to turn pain into gain. Humour and HAPPY music sure helps me do this! I think a great place to start looking for 'happy' folksongs would be in children's collections. There's a song I remember from childhood called 'Morningtown Ride' that I always loved: "Train whistle blowin' - makes a sleepy noise, Underneath their blankets - go all the girls and boys. Rockin', rollin', ridin' - all along the bay All bound for Morningtown - many miles away. Bobby blows the whistle - Sarah rings the bell, Johnny swings the lantern - to show that all is well. Rockin', rollin', ridin' - all along the bay All bound for Morningtown - many miles away..." And I remember a line from another kid's song called "Hobo's Lullabye" "Don't you worry 'bout tomorrow, Let tomorrow come and go ..." Always liked that line, even though I couldn't always DO it! Here's to peaceful happy tunes :-) !!! In my opinion, this weary world needs all it can get. daylia |

Subject: RE: are there any happy folk songs ??? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Dec 02 - 11:04 AM Yeah but Morningtown Ride you can read as being about death too... It's the way you tell 'em. Happiness is what you get when things turn out right after all. If ther4's no possibility of them going wrong it's just Prozac. (Except that that does turn out wrong...) A happy ending is only moving if there's a possibility (or a likelihood) of it not being happy. Hence all the Broken Token songs. |

Subject: ADDPOP: What a Wonderful World (Weiss/Thule) From: *daylia* Date: 25 Dec 02 - 11:29 AM Here's a song by George David Weiss/Robert Thuile, recorded by Willie Nelson on the soundtrack from the motion picture "Michael". I've heard that Willie was in the middle of a very painful divorce when he recorded this ... WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD "I see trees of green - red roses too, I see them bloom - for me and you And I think to myself ... what a wonderful world! I see skies of blue - and clouds of white The bright blessed days - the dark sacred nights, And I think to myself ... what a wonderful world! The colours of the rainbow So pretty in the sky, Are also on the faces Of people going by. I see friends shakin hands, Sayin "how do you do", They're really sayin' I LOVE YOU ... I hear babies cry - I watch them grow They'll learn much more than I'll ever know. And I think to myself ... what a wonderful world And I think to myself ... what a wonderful world!" I don't know if it fits the bill as a 'traditional folk song', but even just writing out the words is uplifting to me! Thanks for the chance to be uplifted! {{{ :-) }}} daylia |

Some would maybe be considered more classical than folk, but I don't really see a big difference all the time. For some reason, I kind of like those strange little sappy songs! |

Subject: Lyr Add: HAPPINESS RUNS and I LOVE MY SHIRT From: allanwill Date: 26 Dec 02 - 02:11 PM On a more contemporary theme, Donovan's "Barabajagal" would have to be one of the 'happiest' records. Who could ever forget these gems. Allan HAPPINESS RUNS As recorded by Donovan on "Barabajagal" (1969) Little pebble upon the sand Now you're lying here in my hand, How many years have you been here ? Little human upon the sand From where I'm lying here in your hand, You to me are but a passing breeze. The sun will always shine where you stand Depending in which land You may find yourself. Now you have my blessing, go your way. Happiness runs in a circular motion Thought is like a little boat upon the sea. Everybody is a part of everything anyway, You can have everything if you let yourself be. Happiness runs, happiness runs. Happiness runs, happiness runs. Happiness runs, happiness runs. Happiness runs, happiness runs. Why-o ? Because. Why-o ? Because. Why-o ? Because. Why-o ? Because. Happiness runs in a circular motion Thought is like a little boat upon the sea. Everybody is a part of everything anyway, You can have everything if you let yourself be. You can have everything if you let yourself be. You can have everything if you let yourself be. I LOVE MY SHIRT As recorded by Donovan on "Barabajagal" (1969) Do you have a shirt that you really love, One that you feel so groovy in ? You don't even mind if it starts to fade, That only makes it nicer still. I love my shirt, I love my shirt, My shirt is so comfortably lovely. I love my shirt, I love my shirt, My shirt is so comfortably lovely. Do you have some jeans that you really love, Ones that you feel so groovy in ? You don't even mind if they start to fray That only makes them nicer still. I love my jeans, I love my jeans, My jeans are so comfortably lovely. I love my jeans, I love my jeans, My jeans are so comfortably lovely. When they are taken to the cleaners, I can't wait to get them home again. Yes, I take 'em to the cleaners And there they wash them in a stream, Scrub a rub dub dub And there they wash them in a stream - Know what I mean. Do you have some shoes that you really love, Ones that you feel so flash in ? You don't even mind if they start to get some holes in That only makes them nicer still. I love my shoes, I love my shoes, My shoes are so comfortably lovely. I love my jeans, I love my jeans, My jeans are so comfortably lovely. I love my shirt, I love my shirt, In fact I love my wardrobe. I love my shirt, I love my shirt, My shirt is so comfortably lovely. Subject: RE: are there any happy folk songs ??? From: Art Thieme Date: 26 Dec 02 - 03:16 PM Are there any happy folksongs? answer---Not if they're true to life !! The basic tragedy of life is the real stuff of this life we all live. Comedy is called "COMIC RELIEF" precisely because it is relief FROM that bedrock of tragedy. Is that a negative? No! I have found that a real positive aspect of my life has been learning how to accept and learn great things from the wisdom that comes from seeing the other side of the coin. To the extent that the folksongs speak to the tragedy in life, they will be sad and not comic. The funny ones are just fun---and quite a relief after, say, a nuclear war. But they are rarely ones that touch profundity. Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: are there any happy folk songs ??? From: Cluin Date: 26 Dec 02 - 09:10 PM I think it was Townes Van Zandt who said, "There's two types of songs: the blues and zippity doo dah." And also a reply to a heckler who asked if he didn't know any happy songs: "Ma'am, these ARE happy songs." I've written a happy song or two myself (but always with an element of, or in response to, some sort of pain or tragedy to kind of ground them), but I think Art's on to something there. The ones that really hit home aren't too glib. |

Subject: RE: are there any happy folk songs ??? From: Little Hawk Date: 26 Dec 02 - 09:52 PM There are plenty of happy folk songs. Consider the many lively sea shanties, and Christmas songs for a start... McGrath - Yeah, Morningtown could be about death...but from what I hear, death is one of the happiest things that could ever possibly happen, depending on how you look at it. (I'm not using dark humour when I say that...) What if death is like waking up to the Greater Self you never knew you had? It's a distinct possibility. I wouldn't mention it, had I not heard rumours from those far wiser and more experience than me on the subject. Now dying...dying can be a rough experience (depending)...but death...death is like the big awakening!!! That's why those old folksongs say stuff like..."If it wasn't for dyin', I'd wish I was dead" Now here's an opinion from Joan Baez... "Happiness is temporary, believe me, I know. It can arrive like a shining crystal and and leave with the morning snow. Come all ye lads and lasses, the kingdom of childhood passes..." Sounds like Joan and Art Thieme kinda saw it the same way, at least maybe sometimes... - LH |

Subject: RE: are there any happy folk songs ??? From: *daylia* Date: 26 Dec 02 - 10:11 PM For what it's worth, I don't think songs have to be of the 'this-world-really-sucks-gonna-go-jump-off-a-bridge-now' variety in order to be 'true to life'! The trees and flowers and rainbows and babies and loving friendships ARE a very real part of my life - thank you very much! Every bit as real as the s**t. And when Im really at rock-bottom it's music that reminds me of life's beauty and mystery and wonder that I need, not stuff that keeps pounding away at the pain! Why are people so drawn to doom and despair? Maybe it's just easier - and gets more attention - to complain and shock and horrify than to sing the praises of life! Negative stuff sure sells better anyway. People just don't seem to appreciate the real MIRACLE of their own existence enough. It's just taken for granted. And the blessings of life slip by unnoticed, until we're about to lose them of course. Maybe that's what Joni Mitchell meant when she said "DON'T IT ALWAYS SEEM TO GO THAT YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'VE GOT TILL IT'S GONE..." I, for one, am GRATEFUL to be alive today!!! Cheers! :-) daylia |

Subject: RE: are there any happy folk songs ??? From: GUEST,Cluin (at girlfriend's again) Date: 27 Dec 02 - 06:37 PM But see how all the happy songs are in reaction to, or defiance of, sorrow and trouble? Subject: Lyr Add: THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND (Woody Guthrie) From: Banjer Date: 28 Dec 02 - 01:47 AM The only verses I know are these: THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND (Woody Guthrie) This land is your land, this land is my land From California to the New York Island, From the redwood forest to the gulf stream water, This land was made for you and me. As I went walking that ribbon of highway I saw above me that endless skyway, I saw below me that golden valley This land was made for you and me. CHORUS I roamed and I rambled and I followed my footsteps O'er the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts, While all around me a voice was sounding, saying This land was made for you and me. CHORUS In the squares of the city, in the shadow of the steeple In the relief office, I seen my people; As they stood there hungry I stood there asking, --Is this land made for you and me? As I went walking, I saw a sign there; On the sign it said NO TRESPASSING, But on the other side it didn't say nothing-- That side was made for you and me! Words and music by Woody Guthrie, copyright 1956 and 1958 by Lidlow Music Inc. Recorded on his Greatest Songs album tune adapted (swiped?) from Carter Family's Rock of Ages RG I guess those last two verses could be construed as being not happy, but the whole message of the song seems to say that the problems Woody addresses in those verses should be overcome in the 'Land made for you and me' |

Subject: RE: are there any happy folk songs ??? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 28 Dec 02 - 01:19 PM Happy folksongs???? We don't need no stinkin' happy folksongs!!!! But seriously folks..... Here's a little food for thought. A sense of happiness is so easy to convey using strictly instrumental music that adding words to a happy tune is often unnecessary. If I want to communicate happy I just play "Gaspe' Reel" on the hammer dulcimer. For sad, I need words too. Waltzes and airs can communicate a sense of seriousness, but it takes words to add specific content. Happy doesn't usually need specific content because I don't need to know why you're happy, just that you are, and that can be conveyed without using words. Bruce |
