Subject: BS: Suspenders From: Ringer Date: 13 Dec 02 - 01:53 PM In England, suspenders are the devices ladies wear to hold up their stockings (thigh-length hose). I know that Americans use suspenders to stop their trousers falling down, but what word do they use for stocking supports? |

Subject: RE: BS: Suspenders From: Troll Date: 13 Dec 02 - 02:05 PM Suspenders (trousere) are also called braces and/or galluses in some places. Does anyone else have other names for either of these appliances/garmets/ accessories/thingamabobs? troll |

Subject: RE: BS: Suspenders From: GUEST Date: 13 Dec 02 - 02:06 PM A garter is a band worn round the leg to keep a sock or stocking up, it's not the same thing as a British 'suspender' American women do wear those, so the question as to what they are called remains |

Subject: RE: BS: Suspenders From: GUEST,Q Date: 13 Dec 02 - 02:14 PM This was discussed in a thread on differences in English vs. American languages, but I don't think anyone came up with the answer. They were thingamabobs that fastened to the socks and were anchored up around the knee somehow. I saw them- my mouth flew open- in a movie where some rich joe was being dressed for a wedding by his servant. This old boy was dumbfounded. Never seen then since. |

Subject: RE: BS: Suspenders From: dick greenhaus Date: 13 Dec 02 - 02:24 PM In the US "garters" referred either to round-the-calf elastic thing-a-ma-bobs and to proper garters, which ladies clipped to garter belts or foundation garments to hold up stockings. The former have been largely replaced by stretch synthetic fibers at the top of the sock or stocking, and the latter have been replaced by pantyhose. |

Subject: RE: BS: Suspenders From: Liz the Squeak Date: 13 Dec 02 - 06:34 PM Manitas has a pair of sock suspenders... like little pairs of braces for each sock, holding them up with a firm piece of elastic going over the leg and fitting snugly over the top of the calf muscle. Great for when the tumble dryer has eaten the elastic. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Suspenders From: harvey andrews Date: 13 Dec 02 - 07:12 PM "Theadgold's thoroughgrip garterets" were actually invented by "Beachcomber" a huge influence on Milligan who did a brilliant TV series of his written sketches.
