For the garden of love has no place for them when Their fragrance has whithered and died. It's not on the DT. I have copy of an old recording (78), but it's not to clear. Anyone no the rest? Evans and Carroll Fleming w&m 1901. I tried Levy, Duke and American Memory sites for sheet music, but with no luck. The Everhart recording has not been reissued so you will be pretty lucky if you find someone else who has it. The only other recording was by Jess Johnson in 1932, but that was unissued. Meade et alia give a reference to 'Robbins p 11', but I cannot find any 'Robbins' in the bibliographical lists at the back of the book. The only other printed reference given is that 'The Rose With a Broken Stem' is #96, pp 251-2 in Mildred Haun 'Cooke County Ballads and Songs' MA Thesis Vanderbilt University Nashville, Tenn, 1937. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: She's only a rose with a broken stem From: Jim Dixon Date: 10 Dec 02 - 10:22 PM The June [2000?] issue of 78 Quarterly -- a magazine for record collectors -- has an article called "She's Only a Rose with a Broken Stem" (Clay Everhart and the North Carolina Cooper Boys) by Bob Carlin--Detailed biographies and discographies, early photos of a group long admired by a "small cadre of collectors and scholars." Clay Everhart and the North Carolina Cooper Boys recorded "The Rose with a Broken Stem" (Columbia 15737), in 1930, or maybe 1932, according to different sources. The New Hampshire Library of Traditional Music & Dance has the sheet music. It's also in a book called "American Treasury of 1004 Folk Songs, Vol. 1," by Isabel Hood, Charles Hansen, Inc., New York, NY, USA, 1977. The San Joaquin Valley Information Service has a copy. |
