Subject: Lyr Add: HUSH MY MOUTH (IF I AIN'T GOIN' SOUTH) From: GutBucketeer Date: 08 Nov 02 - 12:04 AM Here is a great old song as sung by Cliff Edwards (Ukulele Ike). Henry "Red" Allen and Coleman Hawkins also did a jazzed up version. Does anyone have the chords, or better yet the chords and melody line? JAB HUSH MY MOUTH (IF I AIN'T GOIN' SOUTH) Maurice Sigler, Michael H. Cleary, Al Hoffman As sung by Cliff Edwards, 1933 My tie is in my collar. Ticket man done got my dollar. Hush my mouth if I ain't going south, to open up the cabin door. My trunk is my pocket It's a lot of junk, and I don't need to lock it. Hush my mouth if I ain't going south, to polish up the cabin floor. Shore... Ain't seen my mammy for the longest time. I know my pappy's getting old. And though I'm coming home without a dime. It's me they want to see, and not my gold. I'm through with cloudy weather. Rain and me just don't seem to go together. Hush my mouth if I ain't going south, to open up the cabin door. (Instrumental and "Effin" break".) (then repeat with slight variations shown below) My tie is in my collar. Ticket man done got my dollar. Hush my mouth if I ain't going south, to open up the cabin door. My trunk is right chear in my pocket It's a lot of junk, and I don't need to lock it. Spank me naked if I ain't going south, to open up the cabin door. - The RedHotJazz site states that Cliff Edwards developed a style of improvised singing, which he called "effin". "Effin" sounds a lot like the human voice imitating a hot trumpet or kazoo solo. - |

I know you probably already checked, but I did a search at the Levy site. Boy are there a LOT of songs that start with 'Hush'! Refresh. |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Hush My Mouth If I ain't Going South From: 12-stringer Date: 09 Nov 02 - 02:08 PM It sounds to me as if it uses the following chords: C (first 2 lines)/C7/F/Ab7/C/B7/Bb7/A7/D7/Ab7/G7 (first half of the verse, same but rounding off to D7/G7/C to resolve the second half) chorus Am/E7/Am/E7/Am/D7/G7 The Ab7 after F isn't really "right," I believe (but I play it in everything, as with the C/B7/Bb7/A7), and my arrangement is basically a hilljack resetting of a Broadway tune in the 1920s tradition. But it's moderately close. It's how I'd play it, whether it sounds exactly like the record or not. (For some odd reason, my arrangements usually don't! But why would you want to play a song *exactly* like someone else does?) What a great collection of songs that Red Hot Jazz is! Edwards' repertoire is a delight to anyone who loves the progressions above. And don't miss Jay C Flippen and his Gang doing "Sadie Green, the Vamp of New Orleans," elsewhere on the site. Yes, the same Jay C Flippen who used to play bad guys in 50s tv westerns. |

Red Hot Jazz is a great site, and IMHO Cliff Edwards is one of the great forgotten masters of the 20th century. His music is simply Fantastic! I will check out Jay C Flippen. Does he do Flip, Flop, and Fly :-) JAB |

Subject: Chords Add: HUSH MY MOUTH (IF I AIN'T GOING SOUTH) From: GutBucketeer Date: 19 Nov 02 - 01:35 AM It turns out that the Waring Music Collection in the Penn State Special Collection library had the music with Ukulele Chords! It's not exactly the same as Cliff Edwards, but good enuff for me!.
Here are the lyrics and chords from the 1933 sheet music. I will try to make a midi of the melody line tomorrow night.
