Subject: BS: Ordering merchandise off the Net From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 07 Nov 02 - 10:06 AM We need a new suitcase, and there's a nifty-looking site that has just what we want, but how do I know it's a legitimate business? Maybe they will ring up a charge and never send me a suitcase. How does one check the reputation of an online retailer? (I looked them up in Google and the URL of the site has "yahoo.com" in it.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Ordering merchandise off the Net From: Mudlark Date: 07 Nov 02 - 11:23 AM Leeneia...you might try a few of the comparison shopping sites (sorry, don't have any site addresses but they are easy to find). Just a few days ago I made my first major purchase from a web firm...my old camera died and the local prices were outrageous for replacement. I went looking on the web, cross-referenced several search sites, and came up with a dealer with very high ratings across the board with lowest price. I haven't received my camera yet (worry, worry) but they've sent me a couple of tracking emails. Think one of the sites was called BizRate...but that may be just for electronics/cameras and such. Good luck...I'll be watching this thread for better info than I've got. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ordering merchandise off the Net From: GUEST,Russ Date: 07 Nov 02 - 11:28 AM I usually order from sites that are the online presence of brick-and-mortar companies (e.g., Sears, CompUSA) or companies from which I ordered by phone in the old days (e.g., Computer Discount Warehouse). I've done it for years without problems. I don't shop strictly by price. I am willing to pay a bit extra to an orgization with a known track record, either with me or my friends. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ordering merchandise off the Net From: mg Date: 07 Nov 02 - 11:31 AM can't go wrong with Lands End. And for many many retailers, including some of the most famous mail order, you can go to the Hungersite.com and go under shopping...if you start there, every dollar you spend will provide one cup of food for the hungry. mg |

Subject: RE: BS: Ordering merchandise off the Net From: artbrooks Date: 07 Nov 02 - 12:38 PM Didn't know that, Mary, and thanks for the tip. I do much of my shopping on line, but, as GUEST, Russ said, most of it is from places that either have a physical presence somewhere, such as REI, or an excellent reputation, eg, Dell. As noted, do some comparison shopping, and try both Lands End and REI for you suitcase. Both have excellent return policies. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ordering merchandise off the Net From: Just Amy Date: 07 Nov 02 - 12:42 PM FYI - Land's End was bought out by Sears. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ordering merchandise off the Net From: EBarnacle1 Date: 07 Nov 02 - 03:38 PM Both Land's End and LLBean stand behind their products to the point of ridiculousness. Their warrantee is simple: "If it is our product, we stand behind it--forever." This is heartwarming and may have something to do with their loyal customer base, as their prices are usually pretty average. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ordering merchandise off the Net From: Mark Cohen Date: 08 Nov 02 - 01:48 AM I would just say, "Yo, merchandise...get off the damn Net!" Though I'm not exactly sure why you'd want to. Aloha, Mark |
