Any ideas which tune(s) would fit nicely with "The Sweeps" in an Irish set? And, is this tune best played in A or D?

Ta muchly, Nic.

I'd not heard of The Sweeps. I have just searched John Chamber's and had several results for The Sweeps Hornpipe. There seem to be 2 tunes, one is more or less what I would call The Belfast Hornpipe and there is a second tune I don't know. Is it one of these tunes, and if so, which?

Cool tune *Jeri* I will give it a try. Upon rethought this tune "Sweeps" is probably Scottish in origin, but i can see how "Showmans fancy" would be a perfect partner to it. Oh how i wish i had studied *set* tunes earlier on, particularly regarding the standard keys, still, there's no time like the present.

Thanks, Nic.

I repeat my earlier question. Are we talking about this tune:

Or this tune (it is noted as an alternative title in this abc sample):

Or maybe something else?

Only asking as it doesn't seem to make sense to make suggestions when the name may apply to more than one tune (although in this case I guess one can at least say they are both hornpipes).

*Guest* Yes to the second one, sweeps/Belfast.
This was played frequently (along with other complimentary ones)
in folk clubs in the borders (Scottish) where i used to live.

Thanks.

Not to question Jeri's taste at all - I like her suggestion - but to offer another suggestion. I used to like to follow it with what I knew as the Tipperary Hornpipe. Couldn't find it at JC's but asked at tonights session. It appears to be a cut down (ony pt one and two) version of the Derry Hornpipe.

A MIDI of the Derry at JC's is here
