Subject: Origins: Dock Boggs: Prodigal Son From: boldreynard Date: 24 Oct 02 - 08:58 AM Does anyone know of a printed source for "Prodigal Son" as played by Dock Boggs on his Folkways collection? I can't find it in any of the southern collections that I have. My thanks for any input. |

Subject: Lyr Add: PRODIGAL SON (Dock Boggs) From: GUEST,Richie Date: 24 Oct 02 - 09:14 AM Lyr. Add: PRODIGAL SON- Dock Boggs Legendary Dock Boggs, Verve/Folkways FV 9025, LP (197?), cut# 10 When I left my father's house, I was well-supplied; I made a mistake and I did wrong And I'm dis-satisfied. I believe I'll go back home I believe I'll go back home I believe I'll go back home And acknowledge I've done wrong. I'll go back to my father's house, I'll fall down on my face. Say that I'm unworthy, I'll seek a servant's place. I'll go back to my father's house, The place I love so dear, For there they have plenty to eat And I'm a-starving here. I believe I'll go back home I believe I'll go back home I believe I'll go back home And acknowledge I've done wrong. Father seen him coming, He met him with a smile, Threw his arms around him Says "This is my wandering child." Father said to his servants, "Go kill a fatted calf, Invite both friends and relatives, My son's come home at last." I believe I'll go back home I believe I'll go back home I believe I'll go back home And acknowledge I've done wrong. Banquet's in procession; All sorrow has passed. Father's heart was filled with joy, His son come home at last. The elder son was jealous, I believe I heard him say, "Gave my brother his portion, I never went away." I believe I'll go back home I believe I'll go back home I believe I'll go back home And acknowledge I've done wrong. Father said to his elder son, "You've been both good and kind, Not a calf I'll give unto thee, But all I have is thine." I believe I'll go back home I believe I'll go back home I believe I'll go back home And acknowledge I've done wrong. Notes: I have two versions of this traditional gospel tune; one posted above by Dock Boggs and one by African-American guitarist Reverend Robert Wilkins. About Wilkins: "Although he left the world of blues for gospel, Rev. Robert Wilkins never abandoned his guitar or toned down his brilliant instrumental tendencies; he simply took his rampaging playing style and used it in the service of the Lord." Check out the song "That's No Way to Get Along" for another possible origin. -Richie |
