Subject: BS: house bricks mad of sewage From: Mr Red Date: 17 Oct 02 - 09:08 AM I read it in the New Scientist. The Koreans have perfected a way or using up to 30% sewage sludge to make commmon or garden bricks. now do we have any better jokes than those about living in muck, crap builders, and waste deep. Not to mention sh*tting blue bricks? |

Subject: RE: BS: house bricks mad of sewage From: mack/misophist Date: 17 Oct 02 - 09:21 AM Some years ago, the Japanese did much the same thing with bricks of compressed garbage coated with plastic. Eventually a building exploded because an exterior brick was gouged and ....No shit! |
|
Subject: RE: BS: house bricks mad of sewage From: Bagpuss Date: 17 Oct 02 - 09:29 AM I believe the Japanese have been making bricks out of incinerated sewage sludge ash for a while. Here's an article from '97 which mentions it. |

Subject: RE: BS: house bricks mad of sewage From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 17 Oct 02 - 09:35 AM It sounds to me like someone has come up with a way to incinerate sewer sludge without public or government outcry. Since common bricks are fired to about 2,000 degrees F anything organic would be burned out. The shit's not really in the bricks anymore. It's in the atmosphere. |

Subject: RE: BS: house bricks mad of sewage From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 17 Oct 02 - 09:43 AM Bagpuss' post with the link to the Japanese article wasn't yet up while I was typing my post above. If the Koreans are using pre-incinerated sludge, that's a horse of a different color. |

Subject: RE: BS: house bricks made of sewage From: Mr Red Date: 18 Oct 02 - 08:49 AM Thanks 'catters, I needed LOL 2day. I think they are using the sludge like as they use any bulking agent - I doubt it has a plate-like micro-structure it is probably granular like the sand that would otherwise be used. The beauty is that any pathogens die in the process so benefit 1. And 2 at present they are using industrial sewage so toxic solids like heavy metals can be locked-in rather than seeping into the water table as leachate. Loved that "what a dump" - in NZ they have remote wooden out-houses where they dig deep holes and give them generic the name of "Long Drops". |

Subject: RE: BS: house bricks made of sewage From: nutty Date: 18 Oct 02 - 08:56 AM There are still examples of "wattle and daub" buildings in this country (UK) ....... is history just repeating itself??? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: house bricks made of sewage From: GUEST,London Bricky Date: 18 Oct 02 - 09:04 AM I thought there had recently been an outcry here in the UK about the dangers of producing breeze blocks and road surfacing material in just this way..apparently there are roads and newly built houses all over the UK that are now a health hazard due to potentialy cancerous incinerated matials being used in their fabrication.. |

Subject: RE: BS: house bricks made of sewage From: GUEST,bbc at work Date: 18 Oct 02 - 11:59 AM I remember seeing, when I was living in S. Korea in 1977-78, laborers filling wooden brick molds w/ a mixture that was largely sand & water & drying them in the sun. Buildings were constructed of massive numbers of these bricks. Sometimes, in our walks around our neighborhood, we'd see buildings go up in a few days & come down almost as quickly, because of the poor quality of the building materials. Cheap, though! What amazed me was how personally clean the Korean people were, even though they did dirty jobs & didn't have most of the convenience appliances we do. best, bbc |

Subject: RE: BS: house bricks made of sewage From: Mr Red Date: 18 Oct 02 - 02:17 PM nutty - You forgot cob - clay straw and cow muck. But it has to be palstered to stopp it weathering. Last house built of cob was about 5 years ago, before that probably 50 years. |

Subject: RE: BS: house bricks made of sewage From: Gurney Date: 19 Oct 02 - 03:34 AM Many a canal boat is waterproofed or caulked with Ossmuckantar. For the insider (who doesn't like that sinking feeling) this is a mixture of tar and the dried end product of horses. Or 'Osses. This valuable fibre is also used sometimes in Daub, as others have pointed out. |

Subject: RE: BS: house bricks made of sewage From: Art Thieme Date: 21 Oct 02 - 11:45 PM These people will REALLY be enterred (in turd) alive !!!!! Also, this idea would be ideal for Eskimos to use to build their igloos. They have frozen bricks. But think o' the stench when it all thaws out----and the walls come a-tumblin' down. To get out from under all the stinking mess, they all will need to (PEOPLE, GET READY) "go through the movements" Love, Art Thieme |
