Subject: BS: I AM REALLY GOOD From: Jeep man Date: 15 Oct 02 - 11:24 PM I have noticed in the last little while that my pickin on my guitar or banjo is outstanding. All by myself in my basement room, I pick a little Norman Blake,Chet Atkins, Merle Travis or Steve Kaufman. I change things by pickin a little Earl Scruggs or JD Crowe on my five string. My newfound excellence on my instruments (My singing is pretty good too) is not due to some miracle that has suddenly given me Talent. The truth is I don't do anything any better than I did last week or last month. Its all in how I look at it. When I started this journey many years ago, it was not to perform, to impress people with my prowess, or to make money. My aim was and always has been to entertain myself. I am the only audience I need to please. I can play Blues, Rock, Folk, Bluegrass or Nursery Rhymes and it all is great. If I don't like a piece, I never play it. If I do like it I may do it for an hour. I can change keys, tempo, leave out verses or add my own. I like me and this is the point. If other people like my stuff and want to hear it, I am pleased that they enjoy it. I enjoy performing but it is not a driving force. I am glad to get my priorities in order again, I am a really good audience. Later, Jeep |

Subject: RE: BS: I AM REALLY GOOD From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 16 Oct 02 - 12:43 AM Right on, Jeep man! Here's a quote from Pete Townshend in the September, 2000 issue of "Guitar Player" magazine: "Sometimes when I pick up the guitar and play, I'm stunned at how well I play...". I figure that, relative to his/her music, every musician is three things: performer, critic and audience. Performing is work. Self-criticism is necessary for improvement. But, it's in being your own audience - in just sitting back and listening to yourself and enjoying it that we find the real joy of making music. Hell, I'm really good too! I wouldn't have more money invested in musical instruments than I do in my whole damned house if I thought I sucked. |

Subject: RE: BS: I AM REALLY GOOD From: Bobert Date: 16 Oct 02 - 11:07 AM Good fir you, Jeepster! You certainly have a healthy attitude and it's nice that you don't think in terms of *product* because *product* can screw you up. Sounds to me like you have just gotten to that point where the information is so imprinted into your hands that you can now step back and just either enjoy yourself and, man, what a wonderful place to be 'cause now you can start to put in the little things that make your playing more enjoyable.... And so yeah, you are... ahhh, for lack of a better term, getting better whether you realize it or not. Bobert |

Subject: RE: BS: I AM REALLY GOOD From: Kim C Date: 16 Oct 02 - 01:35 PM So why is this BS, really? I never imagined, in a million years, that I would one day own a violin, much less play one. I never, ever thought about it. Then it happened. That was four years ago. And y'all, I really, really love to play. I take lessons. I couldn't do what I am doing now without my teacher. There's just some things that work better if someone who knows more than you actually shows you how to do them. Anyway, a few weeks ago, she said, Here, I think you would really like this Vivaldi concerto. Vivaldi CONCERTO? Dang, I never even played a concerto all those years I studied the piano. Well, she was right. I do like it. It's different from what I usually play, that's for sure, but it's a new challenge, and I Can Do It! Even though I won't be playing in the symphony anytime soon. ;-) |

Subject: RE: BS: I AM REALLY GOOD From: Steve Latimer Date: 16 Oct 02 - 06:38 PM Jeep Man, Did I ever need that. I have been working on banjo accompaniement to Yonder Stands Little Maggie. I was thinking it sounded pretty good. Then I played my Flatt & Scruggs CD and wanted to throw my banjo in the fire. The reality is mine does sound pretty good for a relatively novice player. Back to it. I'm the best Bluegrass Banjo picker on the block, maybe in a year I'll be the best in this small Canadian town. |
