Subject: Cork on the Ocean, lyrics From: GUEST,Marion in Cornwall Date: 11 Oct 02 - 02:51 PM Can anyone help with these lyrics (and tune) please. I think it's by Mick Ryan and possibly from his album about the Tolpuddle martyrs. The chorus has the line 'Like a leaf on the wind and a cork on the ocean' in it. Thanks Marion |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cork on the Ocean From: GUEST,Marion in Cornwall Date: 12 Oct 02 - 12:19 PM Shambles, Thanks for refreshing the thread. You had me at a disadvantage for a minute, but John has just gone through his session photos, and having looked you up in the mudcat album, I now realise who you are. Glad you enjoyed the session, we certainly enjoyed your music. John (aka KJ) says was it you whose sunbathing he disturbed at Mullion Harbour? Hope you both enjoyed the rest of your holiday and Hope to see you again sometime. Marion |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cork on the Ocean From: The Shambles Date: 12 Oct 02 - 03:45 PM Yes, some bloke there started playing a concertina and woke us up. I jest, in fact the concertina sounded just right in that context. No luck with the song yet. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cork on the Ocean From: GUEST Date: 14 Oct 02 - 06:01 AM could it be by Jimmy Crowley? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cork on the Ocean From: Kernow John Date: 15 Oct 02 - 06:41 PM Thanks for the idea Guest. Jimmy had an album called Uncorked but I think that was a play on songs from "Cork". I can't find find anything by him that includes the line quoted. Thanks for looking KJ |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cork on the Ocean From: MartinRyan Date: 15 Oct 02 - 06:48 PM Nearest I can think of is the line "Next a boat on the ocean, bobbing round like a cork.." from "The Slip Jig and reel"! Regards |

Subject: Lyr Add: CORK ON THE OCEAN From: GUEST,Jacqui Ross Date: 06 Mar 06 - 11:52 AM Through this long weary year, it seems like forever I've waited and watched as the seasons roll round, In a flame by the fire, in the field, the horizon, In sunshine and shadow your features I've found But as I reach out to feel your arms hold me The pain in your eyes, such sorrow I see, Like a leaf on the wind, like a cork on the ocean You're taken once more so far from me. As the sun slowly sets, the firelight flickers, The clock beats the time as I sit here alone, And I wonder if somewhere you're thinking of me, I feel you beside me, from far off you've flown. But as I reach out to feel your arms hold me The pain in your eyes, such sorrow I see, Like a leaf on the wind, like a cork on the ocean You're taken once more so far from me. Oh they tell me to pray that we'll soon be together, the day will soon come when we meet at the gate, With the children around me,chattering and laughing, The time will soon pass, not much longer to wait. But as I reach out to feel your arms hold me The pain in your eyes, such sorrow I see, Like a leaf on the wind, like a cork on the ocean You're taken once more so far from me. Hope this is of some help. You are right that the song comes from Graham Moore and Mick Ryan's ballad opera, A Tolpuddle Man, but it wasn't written by Mick, but by Sophie Wright (now Sophie Bond) who played Betsy Loveless in the original cast. The song is sung by Betsy in the second act as she waits for the Martyrs to return to England, having been pardoned. A lovely song; hope you enjoy it! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cork on the Ocean From: GUEST Date: 07 Mar 06 - 07:50 AM Probably a different song to what you're looking for, but Beach Boy Brian Wilson's "Until I Die" has lines about a cork on the ocean etc. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cork on the Ocean From: Jim Dixon Date: 11 Mar 06 - 07:38 PM And what is the title of the song that Jacqui Ross posted? I don't think we should assume it's "Cork on the Ocean". |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cork on the Ocean From: GUEST,Jacqui Ross Date: 14 Sep 06 - 07:40 AM Sorry, I don't know what title Sophie gave it,and as it was written specifically for "A Tolpuddle Man" it possibly had no title in the script. I was part of the cast for the second part of the story "The Last Of England" (later the two shows were merged together to tell the complete story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs) and in my copy of the script not all of the songs are actually titled, or are only given working titles. You could try contacting Graham Moore (he has a website), but I'm afraid I've always just thought of it as Sophie's song from Tolpuddle Man. Next time I see Sophie (rarely these days) I'll ask her what the actual title is.... cheers, Jacqui. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cork on the Ocean From: Saro Date: 14 Sep 06 - 09:00 AM If you try Googling Time and Tide you might well come up with Sophie's current venture. I was in the Tolpuddle cast for a couple of Irish tours and have fond memories of singing the song - and it was always referred to as Cork on the Ocean. Best wishes Saro |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cork on the Ocean From: Saro Date: 14 Sep 06 - 09:03 AM Oops - they spell it Timentide and the show is called Salt upon the Shore - that should get you to Sophie... |
