Subject: BS: Blind musicians on Mudcat? From: jim100_1 Date: 09 Oct 02 - 08:43 PM Howdy everybody, You know, I was reading the thread on tuners for blind musicians. I was just wondering if there were any blind mudcat users out theree? I am blind and just joined Mudcat a few weeks ago. I'd also like to pick other blind guitarrest's brains and just see how others do things or what others think. Feel free to write. |

Subject: RE: Blind musicians on Mudcat? From: harpgirl Date: 09 Oct 02 - 10:07 PM I am sighted, then blind, and then sighted again with bionic lens implants; so I don't have any insight for you Jim. I just know that being able to see again after going blind feels like nothing short of a miracle to me and I am grateful. However, you don't want me walking unattended around your campsite at night because I do poorly at night with tree roots and instrument cases about.... |

Subject: RE: Blind musicians on Mudcat? From: Jim Krause Date: 09 Oct 02 - 11:35 PM I guess I qualify, being near blind. Low vision, at any rate. Pretty much freezes me out of the job market. Good thing I can pick and sing, or else I'd not have anything to do. another Jim |

Subject: RE: Blind musicians on Mudcat? From: jim100_1 Date: 11 Oct 02 - 02:45 AM Howdy. Thanks for your responses. To the last question on this thread so far, I have what is called a screenreader program on my computer that turns whatever is on the screen into audible speech. Text to speech software. It's pretty cool. Again, I look forward to much more interaction here now. |

Subject: RE: Blind musicians on Mudcat? From: Mr Happy Date: 11 Oct 02 - 02:57 AM jim, i've a close friend who's registered blind, though she can see a bit. she's a singer-semi professional- and also plays guitar. she recently began doing a basic typing and computer course at a local vision deficiency resource centre. with some encouragement from me, she also became a mudcatter. she doesn't post frequently because although she's got a zoomtext program it doesn't work on the web, so she can't enlarge web pages enough to read them easily. i was interested to hear about your screenreder program- i think it could help my frien in accessing the web more readily. thanks for that info. could you post further details please, cheers, mr happy |

Subject: RE: Blind musicians on Mudcat? From: Jim Krause Date: 11 Oct 02 - 10:24 AM I know of a screen reader program called Jaws 4.5. You can find out more about it here. It is used pretty extensively at a local community resource center where I live. Jim Krause |

Subject: RE: Blind musicians on Mudcat? From: GUEST,Knappo Date: 11 Oct 02 - 01:01 PM Jim: Welcome! I happen to be a mobility instructor. Have you been blind since birth or some time since then? If after, did you learn to play before or after you lost your sight? I have had a couple students want to learn to play guitar after losing their sight. Have you used any learning materials you would recommend to a new player? Tom |
