Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 10 Oct 02 - 05:04 AM Get yourself out to some sessions Ross -- it's good practice, great craic and you meet other musicians and eventually you get together and form a band. It worked for me! The South Midlands Session Guide is a starting point, but only as a guide. It looks a bit out of date, so check first. Certainly the Fox & Hounds, Stony Stratford listing is wrong -- that's now on the first Tuesday each month. I can personally recommend that one (well I would do, I run it), and the Sunday lunchtime Vaults session. Check out The Bull at Barton Le Clay on alternate Mondays (21st is next). I think the Cannon at Newport Pagnell is up and running again on Wednesdays, and I'm sure there are loads more, where you'll find all kinds of music being played. So get out there and find other people to play with --- it's better than staying at home and playing with yourself! BJ |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: GUEST,Ross Date: 10 Oct 02 - 05:45 AM Cheers BJ I think you're right I find going to sessions as a lonely git difficult I suppose to make friends - you have to meet them Gets harder when your a dumpy 44 year old quantity surveyor Still Everyday in everyway, I can get better |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: IanC Date: 10 Oct 02 - 06:20 AM Ross Whether you're bored in Beds, or happy in Herts. Get a copy of Unicorn and you'll be able to see what's available. Just make sure you're not boring in beds. :-) |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: GUEST,Ross Date: 10 Oct 02 - 08:12 AM Thanks Ian The Unicorn is a good magazine - I do read it What's the secret of finding other musicians to colaborate with? When I go to sessions, no one ever approaches me to ask - can never work out whether it's because I'm good/bad/whatever Similarly, I struggle to approach other people Is it the rejection syndrone? |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 10 Oct 02 - 08:23 AM One step at a time, Ross -- it's slow process (unless you're a combination of Bert Jansch and Donal Lunny, in which case people will be all over you with their phone numbers -- I've seen it happen!)Get chatting to the people who are playing the kind of music that you're into. Swap thoughts on favourite songs and performers. Build it up gradually. By the way, what kind of music are you into? And which sessions? BJ |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: GUEST,cresby.com Date: 10 Oct 02 - 08:34 AM Just as I thought - that South Midlands Session Guide is dated middle of 2000. Ring any contact first before travelling to a venue. If you find a copy of Puddingstone or Unicorn magazines they list sessions down that way. Martin Nail's lists were fairly comprehensive when I last looked cresby.com has links to various sites adjacent to my area including Martins. Trawl the threads for songwriting ideas & go back at least a year using filter songwriting colaborators need careful handling &/or choice but the collective wit of the Mudcat has a lot to pick and choose from on the subject. You might want to post an example of the results here. (hint use Lyr Add as a prefix to a new thread for it) |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: GUEST,Ross Date: 10 Oct 02 - 08:45 AM Hi BJ No - I'm no musical genius The Bert Jansch thing is interesting, as I once heard a recollection of a session back when he first started, where they used to hate his singing - must be encouragement there I have been visiting sessions over several years - Blue Anchor St Albans & the Mill in Park Street, Redbourn (never played) Holly Bush, Silver Cup - Harpenden, Bedford folk club, Campton White Horse, Barton-Le-Clay - the Bull, have been member of the Luton University workshop for 3 years (where played various gigs in groups of half dozen people) Sometimes I think I'm too slow in developing rather than too fast I like all music - I like folk because it's much more obtainable than other forms - have no specific preferences Trouble is, at sessions there is very little time to talk - You either have to talk while someone else is playing, grab them at the bar or in the tiny interlude parts - normally when other people are also wanting to talk to them - not easy when you're a stranger |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: Amos Date: 10 Oct 02 - 09:39 AM Ross: As WYSIWYG once said, we're the ones we're waiting for. Take yourself lightly and look for the smiles -- the worry is self-defeating, usually. Be of good cheer -- if you start laughing, you'll find good reason to laugh. A |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: GUEST,Ross Date: 10 Oct 02 - 11:03 AM That's good advice Amos I try to follow those rules as a rule But most people seem to think those atributes are signs of madness John Lennon said 'life is what happens while you're waiting for something else to happen' Is that true? - I think probably it is? |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: smallpiper Date: 10 Oct 02 - 11:14 AM Generally I find that if you ring someone to see if their session is on they will look out for you arriving and that's always a good way to break any ice. Just make sure you turn up when you said you would. Best of luck and enjoy. |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: GUEST,Ross Date: 10 Oct 02 - 12:26 PM It must be easier to be a jedi night than a folk musician Is it compulsory to be a solo artist? |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: GUEST,Mad axe murderer Date: 10 Oct 02 - 03:08 PM If I was you Ross, I'd go down the pub & get pissed Who needs bloody musicians Whats a jedi night - bit like a stag night? |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 10 Oct 02 - 04:18 PM Funnily enough the editorial in the latest issue of Unicorn slags off local sessions which are "closed groups" to strangers. In the folk scene we have a self image of being open and inclusive but it is often untrue. Before anybody flames me for that, go to a strange session or club, leave the instrument in the car and go in as a punter and see how you are treated. |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: Herga Kitty Date: 10 Oct 02 - 04:26 PM Ross Depending how far north in Beds you are, you could try zipping down the M1 to Wealdstone for Herga on a Monday some time. Do check the website (www.hergafolk.org) and map first though, because the Royal Oak, Peel Road isn't as easy to get to by road as it used to be. Kitty |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: GUEST,Ross Date: 10 Oct 02 - 04:45 PM Thanks Peter - I thought it was just me From experience, I know these things take time Sometimes a lfetime is'nt long enough Thanks Kitty - sounds a good session - is it every Monday? |
|
Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: Leadfingers Date: 10 Oct 02 - 08:59 PM Herga is a Bloody good club , but it AINT a session. And I dont think you will find a kindred spirit there to write or perform with. Its worth a visit though.Getting an act together, even for local spots aint as easy as some might think.Tried an AD in any of your local music shops?.We got a nice little trio together that way a few years ago.If you are totally desparate PM me and I'll really depress you. |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: Herga Kitty Date: 11 Oct 02 - 02:43 AM Ross I can't remember the last time Leadfingers turned up at Herga on a Singers Night as opposed to a Guest Night. We meet every Monday except Bank Holidays. The club used to have a reputation for being heavily traditional, but these days it's pretty mixed, and we have Johnny Collins and Graeme Knights among the regulars. We also have 2 singer songwriter guitarists who turn up fairly regularly (Helen Akitt and George Papavgeris). Kitty |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: GUEST,Ross Date: 11 Oct 02 - 03:57 AM The Herga joint sounds interesting I agree with you Leadfingers - it's not an easy task Maybe that's why there are so many solo artists Thanks for all the advise |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 11 Oct 02 - 06:05 AM Yes, but which night is jedi night? BJ |
|
Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: GUEST,Ross Date: 11 Oct 02 - 08:00 AM Every other Monday at the Bull in Barton-Le-Clay 21st October, then 4 & 18th November, 2, 16 & 30th December Light sabres are optional No Darth Vadars allowed http://bartonfolk.bedfordshireonline.co.uk/ |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: Sarah the flute Date: 11 Oct 02 - 08:37 AM Maybe mudcat should start a section where people can say if they are looking for playing partners so that then people can go to sessions together and not be frightened |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: GUEST,Ross Date: 11 Oct 02 - 10:07 AM That's a brilliant idea |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: treewind Date: 11 Oct 02 - 10:58 AM Here's another couple of related Bedfordshire sessions: * The Sutton Folk Club in the Village Hall, Sutton, on the second Saturday of every month (big concert style club, but with floor spots) * A session in the John of Gaunt (pub over the road) which has now been fixed as the Friday after the folk club day. Definitely small, friendly and non threatening. Les the landlord of the pub is a singer and guitarist and runs the folk club. Mary H. and I get along to both whenever we can. Anahata |

Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: GUEST,Ross Date: 11 Oct 02 - 03:40 PM Thanks Anahata Anywhere you play sounds good I like to thank you for coming to the Bull in Barton last month Both Mary & yourself are an encouragement to any musician/singer Is the John of Gaunt also in Sutton? |
|
Subject: RE: Bored in Bedfordshire, UK From: treewind Date: 12 Oct 02 - 01:12 PM Yes, there's really only one street, with the village hall on one side and the pub on the other, not quite opposite. Thanks for your kind words - if you want to suffer a whole evening of us we're playing at the Mad Nanny/Letchworth & Baldock club this Thursday (17th Oct). Goldcrest Inn, Baldock High Street.
