Subject: A new way to identify a tune! From: Bill D Date: 16 Sep 02 - 09:07 PM someone has put an application online that will allow you to either whistle a tune, or enter it with a notation system---then it will look up the result in a database. You 'can' specify only 'folk music'.... The whistling trick involves having Java installed & running and having either a 'permission file' for it to access your computer, or, the easier way, downloading a java file with the .jar suffix and running it to record the tune you want analyzed. Then you take the code it gives you and enter that in the online database. (This would be theoretically the same code you would enter if you were NOT whistling.) I am not a good whistler, but I finally got it to list "Drill Ye Tarriers" in a list of possible matches Interested? go to http://name-this-tune.com/ and take a look. It truly has possiblities. I have been playing with some java-based applications recently, and had the requisite java on my PC, so it did work for me pretty easily..(except for the mediocre whistling ability..*grin*) |

Subject: RE: A new way to identify a tune! From: katlaughing Date: 17 Sep 02 - 12:09 AM Interesting, BillD, does it have a function to let one hear the results? I couldn't find such and am wondering without that what good it will do most folks who cannot read the dots, besides give them possible names of songs, which I know can be helpful? It seems exciting, I'm probably not understanding it just right.:-) |

Subject: RE: A new way to identify a tune! From: Bill D Date: 17 Sep 02 - 12:15 AM it will play back what you enter....and let you 'edit' it if it doesn't sound right..... I'm not sure that the world needs this...*smile*....but no doubt everyone wishes they had had it a time or two.... "dum.de.dum dah...dee. dee.duumm...I KNOW I know that tune from somwhere!" |

Subject: RE: A new way to identify a tune! From: katlaughing Date: 17 Sep 02 - 12:36 AM As a matter of fact, I just was during a show on BBC. I KNOW the tune, just can't place the name, dammit!**BG** Didn't know if I wanted to download their java thing or not, though, so haven't done, yet. Didn't mean to rain on your parade; I DO think it's a nifty thing! Think it would recognise a hum instead of a whistle? I have a good whistle, but I feel for those of you who are whistle-impaired.*BG* katducking> |

Subject: RE: A new way to identify a tune! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 17 Sep 02 - 02:38 AM We've just had it installed... wonder how it will cope with Manitas who, despite being extremely talented instrumentally, has an uncanny ability when humming, singing or whistling a tune, to make it sound like garage music - i.e., tuneless and disjointed.... Subject: RE: A new way to identify a tune! From: Bill D Date: 17 Sep 02 - 10:34 AM and they invite people to submit new tunes for their database...wonder if there's a way to plug in the new DigiTrad to that?!.... |

Subject: RE: A new way to identify a tune! From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 17 Sep 02 - 02:06 PM I don't know about other songwriters, but every time I come up with a new melody, I wonder if I'm just repeating something I've heard elsewhere. Maybe this is the answer! BJ |

Subject: RE: A new way to identify a tune! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 Sep 02 - 02:06 PM You 'can' specify only 'folk music'....
You mean they've come up with a program which has solved the question "What is folk?"! |

Subject: RE: A new way to identify a tune! From: Davetnova Date: 17 Sep 02 - 03:09 PM Hey thats great I put in the DURDDU's for a tune I've played for ages never knew what it was. It came up with Bobby Casey's checkedit with the tab on mandolincafe and its spot on. I didn't even have to whistle. |
