I think the writer's first name was Rosie, but I can't remember her surname. It was probably written in the 1970's.

I have this song at home. It is called Sporting Dogs written by Dave Dodds. I sing it ocasionally, but won't try to rely on memory at the moment. I will search it out tonight, and post it here tomorrow if no one beats me to it.

Here's a song in praise of sporting dogs – whatever be there nature
From the keeper's trusty spaniel to the gypsy's crafty lurcher.
First a verse now for the Labrador – oh be he black or yellow
He'll retrieve for you 'most anything and he's a bonny fellow.

The pointer he's a fine dog – he'll run and run for ever
He will flush the grouse and pheasant from the moor and from the heather.
The otterhounds a lusty dog – through brook and stream and mire
Over stone wall and through calvert – through the thicket and the wire.

The beagle he's a fine dog – he doesn't have a care
You can see his tail so proud in the air as he runs after the hare.
And last of all the terrier – although he's small he's merrier
He will fight the fox and badger and he'll always stand his ground.

He will mark for you your ferret when a rabbit he does kill
And he'll warn you of all dangers with his yapping loud and shrill.
But if you want a sporting dog – then do as I suggest
And choose a springer spaniel for he will serve you best.

For he's swift of foot and sure of his nose and he works with a will
And he'll retrieve for you the fattest hare that ever you can kill.
He'll warn you of all dangers and he'll guard you from all strangers
He's the finest little sporting dog – it's him that tops the bill.
