Subject: Lionel Hampton - RIP From: Fiolar Date: 01 Sep 02 - 09:11 AM Sadly the death has been announced of the great American jazz vibrapahonist, pianist, drummer and bandleader Lionel Hampton. Born in April 1909, he initially started as a drummer with Paul Howard's Quality Serenaders. He made his first recordings in 1930 and appeared in the Louis Armstrong's "Skeleton in the Closet" number in the 1936 film "Pennies from Heaven." He was one of the first players to become adept on the vibraphone. He played with the Benny Goodman band from 1936 to 1940 and began his own career as a bandleader in 1941. He appeared in such films as "A Star is Born" (1948) and "The Benny Goodman Story" (1955). His compostitions include "Blues in My Flat" and "Midnight Sun" among many others. A sad farwell to a great performer. |

Subject: RE: OBIT: Lionel Hampton - RIP From: catspaw49 Date: 01 Sep 02 - 11:01 AM There probably aren't enough words to state the contribution of Lionel Hampton to jazz. The one word that has to be there is "vibes." He brought an instrument to that world that was made for that world and it became a basis for many a different sound especially within the quintet/sextet size group, ie, bari sax and vibes with piano, bass, and drums. A real performer, a real musician who leaves a real mark in the jazz world. Spaw |

Subject: RE: OBIT: Lionel Hampton - RIP From: Kaleea Date: 02 Sep 02 - 12:53 AM I always enjoyed the music of Mr. Lionel Hampton. It saddens me to see our greatest founding fathers of jazz (& other genres of music) fading away. However, the music will live on! Yes, Mr. Benny Goodman was ahead of his time in his original quartet, which included men of color--it was the right thing to do, despite the prejudice which they were subjected to. It speaks volumes about the talent of the great Mr. Hampton, as well as the strong belief Mr. Goodman had in the music of Mr. Hampton! I was once fortunate enough to attend a college jazzfest in which Mr. Hampton & his musicians gave masterclasses/workshops. I went to all I could, regardless of whether I played the instrument or not--I have always believed that I can learn from other musicians--& I did. The music of Mr. Hampton is quite special, and no one ever played like him, nor will they ever. Thanks to Mr. Hampton for putting those vibes on the map for us to enjoy. Over the years I found a few pieces of his sheet music, & my alltime fav is "Hey Baba Ree Bop," a song which is just as fresh now as it was in olden times, I'm sure. I'll never forget hearing him play those vibraphones--I had chills! |

Subject: RE: OBIT: Lionel Hampton - RIP From: Venthony Date: 02 Sep 02 - 01:01 AM Dear Kaleea, I enjoyed your remembrance, and having had a similar experience at a small midwestern university, it brought both tears and smiles. And, yes, to those of us who thrilled to his genius, he can only be MR. Hampton. Sharing your grief, Tony |

Subject: Rest in Peace: Lionel Hampton From: Bull Am Date: 02 Sep 02 - 07:47 AM I know it's budging a bit from the genre, but I heard on the news yesterday that Lionel Hampton, one of the last remaining jazzmen who was a central player in the glory years, passed on. He will be missed... |

Subject: RE: Rest in Peace: Lionel Hampton From: mack/misophist Date: 02 Sep 02 - 10:01 AM One likes to think that musical heroes are perfect in every way. The fact is that Hampton was a right winger who happily supported Reagan and the Bush family. What a shame. Nil nisi bonum mortuis, be damned it's good that he is no longer poisoning our environment. |

Subject: RE: OBIT: Lionel Hampton - RIP From: mack/misophist Date: 02 Sep 02 - 10:04 AM Musically, there can be no question of his worth. Politically, however, the man was a disaster. Thank heavens he's no longer supporting right wing causes. |

Subject: RE: OBIT: Lionel Hampton - RIP From: EBarnacle1 Date: 03 Sep 02 - 01:44 PM I had the privilege of hearing him only once, when his group was hired to work the same head boat I was working for OpSail, '86. We all had dinner together. He then stepped to the vibes, a tired old man. As soon as he picked up the mallets, a surge of energy clearly went through him. He played untiringly for several hours, not taking breaks, exhausting most of his sidemen. He was a power and will be missed. |

Subject: RE: OBIT: Lionel Hampton - RIP From: Venthony Date: 04 Sep 02 - 01:09 AM Dear Misophist, I'm sorry for you. I'm sure it's never crossed your mind, but any number of folks can disagree with you politically and still lead valued lives. Who knows? Your politics might even be wrong. The fact that Mr. Hampton was a black man in America at a time when to be such was a severe disadvantage -- and even a mortal danger -- speaks, if anything, to the moral soundness of the conservative politics he grew to embrace. As a young man he suffered severely from oppression and discrimination; but he came to believe (many of us would say rightly) that the greatest oppressions are those that seek to destroy opportunity through moral relativism and social engineering. But the two of us can argue that later in a more appropriate forum than a memorial thread. What I want to emphasize here is your complete lack of sympathy and understanding and appreciation for a great human soul; not to mention your arrogance in refusing to recognize that someone who happens to be a conservative might be right about a few things, and that you might be wrong. I am shocked that anyone professing a sound mind would use party affiliation as a litmus test for humanity and artistry. My father was a good folk player before you were born -- he's 80 now. And I've been thumbpicking Travis tunes since I was eight. My family were dustbowl farmers and preachers and teachers and singers and deacons and country preachers in Harrison County, Mo., since before the Civil War. We've been stalwart Republicans AND faithful singers of old songs -- several of which appear in my family tradition and nowhere else -- for over 130 years. How DARE you imply that we are a blight on the earth, not to mention folk music, just because we have different politics than you do. I know this missive darkens Mr. Hampton's memory. I only regret that your ravings made it necessary. Please make an effort, in the future, to imitate a member of polite society. Yours in anger and distaste, Anthony Brown |

Subject: RE: OBIT: Lionel Hampton - RIP From: Mark Cohen Date: 04 Sep 02 - 01:18 AM He played at our graduation dance at Princeton, 1973, in a plaza next to Minoru Yamasaki's beautiful Woodrow Wilson School building, with the reflecting pool and fountain in the foreground. A perfect setting for perfect music. I only wish I could go back and listen now...I'd appreciate it so much more! Aloha, Mark |
