Well, the garden is tidy, the new rockery built and stocked, the garden shed roof repaired and the whole shed repainted, all the logs I've got room for are sawn up and stored, a couple of boxes of books and unwanted work clothes (all those neckties!) sent to the charity shop, we finally got a new phone connection and got our PC upgraded so here I am back on the Mudcat, no longer a GUEST or a stranger (strange, yes but not a stranger).
But what ( I hear you cry - well, maybe not but I'll tell you any way!) has he been doing to keep him away from this scintillating forum for so long? I heartily recommend retirement. I go for a long walk (couple of hours, 6-8 miles) most days, meeting only dog-walkers and the occasional forest ranger, which is a great boon after 30 years behind a desk. The only dodgy incident was when I was crossing a field, a tractor towing a chain contraption came rather near: it was a harrowing experience! I listen to my music at my chosen volume while Herself is out at work, and do a little light housework. I have joined the local Jazz Club and go regularly to the Tuesday night blues sessions (soon to be Thursdays) including visiting US National Steel wiz, Kent DuChaine, and sometimes on Wednesday jazz nights ( including great singers like Lee Gibson and Val Wiseman). We've also seen that often underrated guitarist Joe Brown and his great backing group on tour and Bert Jansch locally in Bracknell ( I last saw him live in 1968!) and Bill Wyman in Reading, with three great guitarists on display, Albert Lee and Terry "Tex" Taylor in the band and Aussie legend Tommy Emmanuel as the support act (nice to see the dobro and mandolin come out -but no kazoo or washboard - on the old skiffle favourite Midnight Special which Bill chose as his only vocal effort of the night with a suitable tribute to Lonnie D) I've started revisiting London museums and done my best to help out Ray's Jazz and Blues Record shop, which I understand may be threatened by a rent hike (or perhaps may rent space at Foyles), spending some of my retirement lump sum there and some at Murder One bookshop. Worryingly, for one who thinks he doesn't look as old as 58, a young woman offered me her seat on the tube when we went up to the theatre recently! We have also had a break away in Cornwall (Eden Project etc.) with a short return to Tresco in the Scillies and a long weekend in Edinburgh. As well as going back to Kalymnos in July we'll be in Alonissos in September.
I have logged on occasionally to the Mudcat for a quick browse on ma-in-law's PC and at the local library- when I could find a spare terminal- but have restricted my contributions. New Year's resolution: to try to post less (except for my self-indulgent "Postcard from Kalymnos 2002 " thread). Well, I may have an accumulation of old jokes to pass on....
So that's all my excuses for not getting the PC updated and online sooner (and the fact that Herself has all the PCC papers on the PC and couldn't afford to be without it until after the AGM).
I did manage to make one of the Stony Stratford sessions and even appear in a couple of the photographs looking like a man awaiting execution. The experience convinced me (as if I needed convincing) that I was born to be an audience member NOT a performer. Chutzpah is no substitute for talent and the rest of the 'Catters there were on another level as far as vocal and instrumental skills are concerned, so in future I'll restrict my washboard and kazoo playing to well-soundproofed and padded darkened rooms when no-one else is around. I guess I may still find myself singing in Greece after a few brandies, but otherwise I'll try to have the self-control to keep shtum.
I notice the flamers haven't gone away, but I'll continue to ignore them!
So, I'm back (did I say that?) ,watch this space for more of my naïve questions.
RtS

Now, to business, RtS. Morticia has fled the NYCFTTS, reportedly in disarray and some sort of deshabille, although details are unclear. Something to do with a torn support system, I believe. In any case, Spaw cannot be reached for comment and appears to be taking no responsibility for repairing either the superstructure in question OR the manning plan for the Center. It is therefore incumbent on you, RTS, to restore some semblance of order to the bedpan closet and its sole occupant at the NYC. Otherwise things may get completely out of handfuls and catastrophic storage overflows are likely to ensue. I must say that it seems to me the management plan for reducing inventory to near-zero in the interests of freeing up capital and adopting the "Just In Time" methods of Japanese management should not have been applied to the bedpan supply!!

I knew we could count on you!

Good to see you again, mate! Here, if you were the one looking like a man awaitng execution, who was the one looking like a man with a big chopper? And what was the radio programme with Bill Wyman, Bob Copper, Pete and Peggy Seeger, and how come you were the only one to hear it?

Answers on a postcard, please ...

Steve

Dear Confused of Milton Keynes
When I was doing my post-retiremnt tidying up I sent Rick some tapes of BBC programmes I'd timeshifted that I would otherwise have reused. One was one episode of the Bill Wyman Radio 2 blues series where he interviewed Lonnie D, one was of a conversation between Bob Copper and Pete Seeger in the US and one was Peggy Seeger's Desert Island Discs.
All clear now, Steve?

Ah... I heard the Desert Island Discs prog, even though I didn't listen to Wyman et al. Rather sad, when you think about it!
