Subject: Tambourine solos?

A little over a week ago, I discovered that there is a type of music/dance in the area of Naples, especially around Vesuvius, in which the solo instrument is an oversized tambourine. The were several mp3's on the site.. One of tambourine w/ drum and one of tambourine w/ chanting, plus others. I was getting ready to download them when the cat unplugged my machine. The next day the page was gone. As an avid enthusiast of oddness, I'm in pain. I need to find some recordings of this stuff. Can anyone help?

I can't help but agree--definitely odd.

There is also a tradition of rather skilful and complex tambourine (panderetas) playing plus female ensemble singing in Galicia. One group I know well of this ilk are Ialma who have made several CDs.

Best regards,

And a similar tradition in the Basque Country. Try "Tapia eta Leturia", an accordion/voice/tambourine duo.

We were visited at our session in Edinburgh recently by a pair of Galician pipers. One of them was also a MEAN tambourine player.

I once saw (on a TV show, Down Under) a piece performed on Tambourine by a troop / squad / formation / ?! of Salvation Army gals - By God! They were QUITE something!!!

Cheers! R-J

I have a recording of Glen Velez playing a solo in 7/8 time on a riq (Egyptian tambourine). It sounds like a whole band.

Airto Moreira has done some amazing stuff with a pandeiro (Brazilian tambourine)

I picked up a recording of an Iranian singer accompanying himself on tambourine recently but (un)fortunately I got it at the same time as a bunch of other CDs and haven't listened to the disc yet.

And ya oughta hear PJ Swan cut loose on a bodhran, unaccompanied; she brings down the house and makes you feel like cutting capers on the tables, she's that good!!
