Subject: Sidmouth Doom Gloom 1991 USA Winner From: DG&D Dave Date: 14 Aug 02 - 05:58 AM Can anyone help me identify a US folkie who came to Sidmouth festival in 1991. The person in question is male and was the winner of the Doom Gloom and Despondency song competition. I believe that the song may have related to the Vietnam war. I am trying to compile a history of the competition and require the following info: The Winners name, The song title and what the Winner added to the trophy. Thanks in anticipation. Dave. |

Subject: RE: Help: Sidmouth Doom Gloom 1991 USA Winner From: Herga Kitty Date: 25 Sep 03 - 01:05 PM Dave I'd guess it's Ron Davies - if you mean the guy who comes over from the US specially for Sidmouth and sings in the Anchor Middle Bar as well as at the Doom and Gloom. But if you mean someone who wasn't at this year's Doom and Gloom I don't think I can help. Ron's photo has now been added to the Yahoo Middlebar portrait collection. Given that it's been a year since you last posted to Mudcat about this, you may have been able to sort this out at the DG&D session last month! Kitty |

Subject: RE: Help: Sidmouth Doom Gloom 1991 USA Winner From: GUEST,Ron Davies Date: 25 Sep 03 - 09:12 PM I said-a no, no, no, it ain't me babe. It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe. I have to admit I've never won that contest.( I've only been going to Sidmouth since 1996) But I'd never want to miss Gloom and Doom----it---it must be unique, and I think it's quintesentially English-------is that a fair statement? I don't think a group of Americans could do it, and if they could, it wouldn't be done with such flair. |

Subject: RE: Help: Sidmouth Doom Gloom 1991 USA Winner From: DG&D Dave Date: 26 Sep 03 - 03:26 AM Thanks for the complement Ron. No, I knew it wasn't you despite your excellent attempts. The Guy I'm looking for only came to Sidders once as far as I can tell. He didn't even return the following year, but sent the trophy back from the States in a Jiffy bag. The trophy was slightly damaged in transit, it didn't matter, at least the Disposable Razor is still the original one, jointly won by Alan Bond and Rod Shearman (Absent Friends). Hard times come again no more..... Dave. |
