Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lone shanakyle From: michaelr Date: 13 Aug 02 - 07:45 PM A very nice version was recorded by Deanta on "Whisper of a Secret" (Green Linnet, 1997). The liner notes give the following background: Shanakyle probably originates from the Gaelic "sean cill", meaning "old church". It is the site of a graveyard outside Kilrush, County Clare, where famine victims were buried during the 19th century. Thirty-nine hundred people died in the Kilrush workhouse in the years 1847-1849. The song was written by Thomas Madigan, a native of Kilrush, probably in the 1860s. The air is a relative of "An Paistin Fionn". Cheers, Michael |
