Subject: TechHelp: Norton Antivirus Won't Run

This has nothing to do with music but I am hoping one of you more knowledgable computer people can PM me with some advice. Recently, while beginning to update NAV virus definitions, a window popped up that said "Virus Alert" with instructions to quarantine, which I followed. After that I began to get exception and error messages and can not open any of my NAV functions. I now also have a NAV quarantine icon on my desktop. I went to Symantec website, and (because of my lack of computer savy) very laboriously went through their troubleshooting guide to determine that the problems were consistent with those caused by the Klez and the Goner viruses. I ran both removal tools, but neither virus was detected in my system. One problem may be that I can not identify what version of NAV I have since I can't open it and have updated and resubscribed since I got my computer. (I guessed at a version.) I have a little icon at the bottom of my screen that says NAV is enabled when I run the cursor over it. Should I try to figure out how to uninstall and then reinstall NAV? Should I shoot my computer? I find Symantec's website to be technically over my head(I may have a very low Head!) Any help or advise will be appreciated. Janie

You need to post this on the Help Forum. More likely to get an answer there.

Oops! Thanks Sorcha. I didn't know there was one. Janie

You can get your version by following these steps (assuming you're using a fairly recent version of Windows): open "my computer", click (in order) C-drive, program files, Norton AntiVirus, Right-click on NAVW 32, click on properties and finally version. The version number will look something like this: 8.0.1.17. The Symantec website for software problems is http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/consumer.html. Good luck.

Well, Sorcha - I wouldn't say it's clear-cut that the Help forum is the place for discussions like this. We've built up a fair body of technical advice in this forum, and it's searchable. To my mind, the Help Forum is for dealing with temporary fixit problems, mostly to do with Mudcat things like cookie resets and the like - individual problems that are not of general interest.
If you think of all the other stuff that gets discussed in the regular forum, I can't see how this would be an inappropriate topic.
Well, that's what I think...

I didn't mean it shouldn't be posted here, Joe, just that she might get better answers on Help. Either that or the Annexe, but you have to be a Mudcat member to post there.

Art, Thanks for telling me how to get my NAV version info. Sorcha & Joe--I apologize if I should not have asked about this in either Forum. I have been trying for over a week to fix this problem using information from the Symantec website without success--probably because of my lack of computer savy. I had seen other general postings here before about computer problems so thought some one may have experienced a similar problem and could "spoon feed" me the solution. Thank you both for taking the time to read the post and respond.

Janie

In my opinion the easiest and most trouble-free way to deal with this is to uninstall and reinstall NAV. I've done it recently, and it's not a big deal.

Janie, you probably have a virus. Phone Symantec, and they will give you the address of the website where you can run their *online* virus-checker and -cleaner; you'll then need to uninstall Norton Anti-Virus and reinstall it.

Janie: You'll also have to have someone who is well versed in computers check to insure that the Klez virus didn't affect your registry and backup system. (AS it did with mine, I just got my computer back) Try going to Symantic again and re-running the Klez viral program. It is a nasty one and if your updates are obsolete, it can be a real booger. Let me know how it goes and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to pm me. Kindest regards, neil
