I'll be in Lancaster County, PA over Labor Day weekend (August 30 - September 2). Anyone know of any folk music events taking place in the area at that time?

Hi, Ballyholme. Southeastern Pennsylvania resident SharonA here. Listing "folk events in the area" depends on what you mean by "area". How far are you willing to travel – into Philadelphia? Down toward the state of Delaware? Or do you want to stay close to Lancaster for the weekend?

Unfortunately, you will have missed the Philadelphia Folk Festival in Schwenksville, which will be held the previous weekend, August 23 to 25... or are you going there, too?

SharonA

Sorry I'll miss the festival, Sharon. I'll be staying in Bird-in-Hand and, no, I don't really wish to travel too far. I've been in Lancaster County quite a few times and haven't seen any signs of music venues. Any pointers to venues in the area would be appreciated.

Hi Guest Ballyholme,

You don't seem to be getting much help here. I don't live in PA, but I visit regularly (spouse hails from central PA). I wouldn't say there is much in Bird-in-Hand, but there is quite a bit of folk in the area around Lancaster and Harrisburg.

There is a lot of good bluegrass and old time music in the area, along with contra dancing & Irish traditional music. But it is here and there, and pretty much catch as catch can, AFAIR.

Unfortunately, the folk radio program which used to give out all that info has gone off the air. But the resources I use are the Susquehanna Folk Music Society, which I think is based in Harrisburg. My guess is someone must be keeping track of the information.

Here is the info I have on them, though I don't know if any is still current:

Website address:

http://www.sfmsfolk.org/

717-763-5744 for concert and event info. The only address I have is:

378 Old York Rd. New Cumberland, PA 17070

You also might want to contact the PhillyFolk mailing list (subscribe here):

http://www.fortissimo.org/PhillyFolk/index.html

You can post a query there for the specific dates you are there, and folks will get back to you with information. They've always been very helpful in the past when I've asked for info for the dates I would be in the area.

Thanks, Guest.

Being a holiday weekend I suspect that any regular events may be suspended but I'll follow your advice and check those two websites out.

Hi again, Ballyholme. Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I've been away from the computer from yesterday morning till now.

Here's a site with links to folk-music events and performers in the Lancaster PA area: http://www.rambles.net/rhymer/links_music.html

This site has contact info – as well as some links – for performers of Celtic music in central PA, so you can find out if they'll be playing in Lancaster that weekend: http://www.oxfordhall.com/oxgroup.htm

Also check out the Lancaster Malt Brewery, at Plum and Walnut streets, Lancaster. They have Irish sessions and jams on some weeknights, so perhaps they feature Irish bands or other folk bands on the weekends. 302 N Plum St, Lancaster, PA 17602-2402 Phone: (717)391-6258

If you're willing to venture as far as the Harrisburg-Carlisle area, there are two fests going on that weekend: August 29 thru Sept. 1 - "The 71st Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu" (The North American Festival of Wales), Harrisburg (Welsh music, Welsh goods, lectures, workshops and a Welsh Church Service); and August 31 - McLain Celtic Festival, 10:00am to 5:00pm, Two Mile House, Walnut Bottom Rd., Carlisle, PA. For tickets and registration info for these events, contact Oxford Hall at oxfordhall@aol.com

Here's a folk-events calendar from public radio station WPSU. Right now it only lists events through August 18th, so check this page in a couple of weeks to find events for August 30-Sept. 2: http://wpsu.psu.edu/folkcal.html

The Turtledove Folk Club of Unionville, PA may be able to give you some info about lesser-known events happening in and around Lancaster that weekend. Their website is http://www.turtledove.org/directions.htm

Also ask the Lancaster County Folk Music & Fiddlers' Society about what's happening in town that weekend. Their regular monthly meeting is on the 2nd Sunday at 2 pm at the Lancaster Friends' Meetinghouse - 110 Tulane Terrace - Lancaster. Call Don Spence at (610) 777-7922.

Thanks, SharonA:

Between you and Guest, I should be able to unearth some musicin the Lancaster area. In the event that I don't find any music, I'll probably settle for a weekend of over-eating in the excellent Lancaster County restaurants.

Ballyholme: You're quite welcome! And there's no way you can go wrong eating the wonderfully rich Pennsylvania Dutch fare. Have some chow-chow and a piece of shoo-fly pie for me! (mit der goo on der bottom – *yum!!!*)

Please c'mon back after the holiday and let us know what music you've found. Will you be jamming, or listening? Whatever you do, have fun!

Sharon

I'll pass on the PA Dutch food thanks! That sort of cooking isn't my kettle of fish (insert bad pun groan here).
