Subject: Lyr Add: BONNIE TAVERN GREEN (from Paddy Tunney)^^

No reason to be surprised; there are many thousands of traditional songs, and they can't all be here! It isn't a very common song; the only traditional example that I know of is the one from Paddy Tunney, who learned it from his mother, Brigid:

BONNIE TAVERN GREEN
^^
(Traditional: as sung by Paddy Tunney; learnt from his mother Brigid Tunney)

The first time that I met my love it was in Tavern Green
And I would wish with all my heart her face I'd never seen.
It was her smiling glances that wounded my heart sore
For I being sick and bad with love till I could love no more.

O love it is a killing thing I hear the people say
And for to love and not be loved it would drive one astray
For to be sick and bad in love, and not to mend again
False heart, false heart must I die of love, and naught to end my pain

I wish my love was a nightingale, sitting on yon garden wall
And I to be a drop of dew, down on her breast I'd fall
Then into my love's arms, all with great sport and play
And we'd rowl about a whole winter's night, and never think long for day

If I was queen of England as Queen Anne was long ago
Many precious jewels to my love I would send o'er
She never would want money while I would reign as queen
For many a pleasant day I spent all round sweet Tavern Green

From Paddy Tunney's book The Stone Fiddle (1979).

Roud Folk Song Index number 3100. A number of commercially issued recordings of Paddy singing this song exist, on some of which the title is spelled Bonny Tavern Green.

Thank you! I used to have the album (Stone FIddle) but lost it in a break-up (he got the music I got the books)

I actually thought it was pretty well known. I know Sheila Chandra recorded but I thought there were others.

Anyway thanks muchly - Catherine

When I called it an uncommon song, I meant that it's rare in tradition; I don't doubt that a lot of people have sung and recorded arrangements of the Tunney set, and that it would be well-known in that sense. No doubt many have just called it "traditional" without crediting their source (grinds teeth!)

Obviously you know the tune, but I'd better add it for people who may come looking later on and who may not be familiar with it. A midi made from the notation in Paddy Tunney's book will find its way in time to the Mudcat Midi Pages; until that day, it can be heard via the South Riding Folk Network site:

Tavern Green (midi)

You'll be happy to know that I always credit my sources. In fact I once waited 15 years before singing a song in performance because I didn't know who I learned it from (taped it at a Willie Clancy week in 1984 and didn't meet the guy again til I went to the Inishowen Folksong and Ballad workshop in Donegal a couple of years ago)

Thanks for your help Catherine
