Are there any genuine homebased work schemes where one actually uses the PC to make a few bob besides those "get -rich-quick " ones where one is required to stock one's garage with soap flakes et al.? Someone told me about a proof-reading scheme but I cannot seem to find any such!

I don't know what is 'offered' in the UK but - when I retired several years ago, I signed on with a work-at-home-on-the-computer thing to see if there is anything legit available. My idea was that if there is anything out there, it couldn't hurt to find out.

Well, like you said, NOTHING has come through that wasn't of the $10000 a week variety. I canceled the service- but I still get the offers.

With this new spam-detecting service offered by my server, I'll see if they catch them at the gate.

I know a number of people who run part time businesses out of their homes for which the computer is an essential portion of their operation. But each is different and tailored to the location and the person.

I have a friend in Texas who supports himself, buying a house and providing for three cats, through acting AND selling books and collectibles on eBay. He does really well with a good knowledge of what to look for when scouring flea markets and the like, for what will sell well on there.

I know several people who do sales of one kind or another and used to know one researcher, and, of course, there's always programming/development. Except for sales and at home programming, I haven't heard of anything else.

I heard a story about the State of California needing people to grade essay exams that public school students were required to take. Have no idea what the pay is. If I remember correctly, the "graders" were scattered around the country. You could maybe find more info on nps.org. That is where I heard this story.

Sorry, I have been with the cattle for most of the day and my eyes are sore from the hay-dust. I thought it said "Utilising the PC in Hull". So I'll butt-out and cloase the door on the way. Sorry about that.

There are a whole lot of people in the US doing the sort of thing you ask about. The problem is that there are no "entry level" jobs in the field.

You will not get a proofreading job (that actually pays you anything) unless you have worked "on the inside" with a publisher, and are known personally by the people who are still on the inside. At least not until you have established a portfolio citing at least 50 or so books you've worked on. There are sufficient people with these qualifications to more than fill the (apparent) need.

Medical transcription is a "semi-legitimate" area, but you will not likely find a "real" job unless you are an RN (or something close to it) and have worked in an office where your work has been seen by the people who run the legitimate transcription businesses.

Exam grading slots will almost certainly be filled by underoccupied professors, or by grad students known to them.

It's a great way to almost make a living, but it's very difficult to break into. You have to "grow" your way in.

You will not likely get any useful (or profitable) employment in "home computer" work from anyplace that advertises - anywhere. No reputable company that uses employees of this kind needs to advertise, or can afford to use anyone without "credentialled experience."

In the most fundamental terms - anyone who advertises these kinds of jobs is just out to get what you'll pay them for a list of people who won't hire you.

On the other hand --- you might get lucky???

John

Bloody hell gang ! that's just about put paid to that little retirement scheme but, thanks for the information. I can see that my first thoughts on those "adverts" were well founded.

The old adage 'Too good to be true' always rings in my head when I read these stupid ads. If it was so easy to 'Make $800 to $2,000 a week from YOUR HOME by computer' why in the hell is everybody clogging the roads in the morning when I am trying to get to work?? For that matter why am i trying to get to work? Why am I nmot sitting at home making that kind of money? Why does ANYONE have to work anymore? Why don't we all just sit home and count the cash rolling in? Can YOU honestly say you know of someone who answered one of these ads and is now retired, or near retirement?

Rant off.....

I do actually run a company that employs people working from home telemarketing for accountants and solicitors, using their computers (and our software) to down- and upload databases. We have people working for us all over the country that we've never met, but chat to on the phone and e-mail daily. No one's getting rich quick, but they're making decent money without all the hassles involved in commuting and office politics. It particularly suits mature people who may have been in business themselves and are now (semi) retired. If any UK catters think that they might be suited to professional telemarketing (not a hard sell) please feel free to PM me.
BJ
