In the Southestern USA, we have hundreds of music festivals. I am mostly familiar with "old time" and bluegrass here in East Tennessee. Every weekend, there is some kind of festival, with camping, within an hour's drive. Most of these are very inexpensive, $15.00, including camping. Our "season" goes from early spring through late fall, about eight months. Is this typical other Mudcatters? What kind of festivals do you have where you live? Which are the best in your area? Last weekend I went to a small festival in Gadsden, Alabama. About 400 people were there, along with three brown bears, who visited over-night, scavenging in the garbage.

Thanks!!!

No such thing as too many local festivals, wilco! Lots of folks can't afford the time, the money, or both to travel to the big festivals, so I say let's have more local ones.

although i wasn't able to attend this time due to work commitments, the Peoples Voice Festival in Beverley UK is an example of the kind of festival i'm happy to attend.

someone had the brilliant idea of persuading pub landlords to pay for guest performers & charge admission to audiences at their pub events.

so this meant that the festival could happen with minimal expense to the organisers & therefore could be a FREE event. i've seen the feedback responses on the PVFF thread & all agree it was a fantastic do!

as i don't normally want to attend concerts at festivals, instead just going for singarounds & sessions either in venues or impromptu in/outside pubs or even just on the campsite, i prefer the free 'back to basics' festivals.

i'll willingly pay camping fees, but resent having to pay for festival tickets when i've no intention of going to any concerts etc.

also, i'm partially un/employed & consequently dosh is short.

if something's local, all the better, but if its free/pay camping only, i can travel reasonable distances.

for example, the do's i've done this year have been:

gwyl ifan goch,tyn-y-groes,conwy, wales-staggering!& FREE!

priestweston, shropshire-fabulous & FREE!

chester ff, kelsall, cheshire- i worked as ground staff- spiffing!

mc yorkshire gathering [thanks mrs duck!]selby, yorks.-indescribable!![custard worshop!] & FREE!

middlewich ff- sessions/sars only-paid camping, brill& FREE!

cleckheaton ff -sessions/sars only-paid camping- supercalifrag etc.& FREE!

sun inn, llangollen, wales-unbelievable session+sar-FREE!+ FREE BEER!, FREE FOOD!- hedonists paradise- slept in car in car park-FREE!

*****************

i'm looking forward to next round of DIY FFs, a nice w/e in shropshire coming up soon, & Rhydllan ff,wales.

sorry its a v. long thesis, most of these listed are fairly local to me.

what say you?

"What ain't we got? We ain't got bears."

But there's a fair number of mini festivals, maybe part of a village celebration, or based on a particular pub. The good thing about them is they undermine the whole process of turning our music into part of the music industry.

It helps us realise what we are primarily about is music making, not sitting back and being a good audience, expecting to be entertained. Encourages us to develop our local loyalties and grow healthier local roots.

When Linda and I go to big festivals, we seem to spend most of our time in sessions - many of them offsite in pubs. It's often more fun (and much cheaper) to go to the small festivals where the pub sessions are the main thing.

I don't believe you can have too many small local festivals. They, for me, are part of the lifeblood of the folk scene, being generally more intimate and less expensive and providing a very important stage for some of the less well-known but highly talented performers. I also agree with McGrath that they keep the music with the people instead of things being controlled by the music industry.

All the best

mooman

Over the past ten years there have been more and more new festivals coming on to the calendar. There has to be a saturation point where existing festivals drop in attendence, especially in musicians to join in the sessions. I dont think the numbers attending festivals are increasing quickly enough to counter this. How small is a "small" festival before it becomes a 3 day session?

Shankmac: Duddon Valley last year was small enough to qualify as a three-day session, wasn't it? And very local, too.Set up to celebrate local tunes (with a few nice neighbours such as you good self). I think we need more of them. Though as you are an organiser of a long-established festival I can see you might not be totally in agreement with that viewpoint.
