Mumbles Maritime Festival

Subject: Mumbles Maritime Festival From: Skipper Jack Date: 17 Jul 02 - 06:07 AM Having put the Swansea Maritime Festival to bed for another year, I am giving the "wake up" call to The 4th Mumbles Maritime Festival (10th-11th August) Stormalong John, Shanty Jack, Capstan Full Strength, Baggyrinkle, Inner State Theatre and Bosun's Call will be providing the salty sea songs. The sounds of Wales will come from The Rhos Cwmtawe Male Voice Choir, and then there's The Constellation Big Band with the good old fashion song and dance from the 40's onwards. It all takes place at The Southend Park in Mumbles, Swansea and probably in a nearby pub!! The Mumbles Yacht Club are putting on a barbecue on the Saturday night and the "salty seadogs" will be providing the entertainment. There's a heckava lot more to do and see as well. Again, it's all FREE. Let's hope that we have the glorious weather that we had in Swansea! Will we see some of you Mudcatters? Let's hope so.

It houses the Mumbles Lighthouse and the Pier, with attendant Lifeboat station. Behind Mumbles Head is the village of Oystermouth. Just off Mumbles Head are the Mumbles themselves, two small domed rocky islets. These are believed to have given rise to the name, "Mumbles" being derived from a Welsh word for a lady's "busty substances". Anything more you need to know? They didn't have web-sites to remind them of things like that in those days. After all, anyone who can mistake a dugong for a beautiful mermaid must have either a) terrible eyesight, b) a very bad memory or c) a desperate need. Make your own choice. Andrew
