Amusing article in the July 15 New York Times by David Mamet, the playwright, about learning to play music. How to eliminate? is one of his questions (based on the advice to eliminate the third in a major chord since we can hear it, cf. the earlier thread on this subject); he notes that Chekov eliminated plot from his plays, but we still fill it in, as part of our human propensity to fill things in, add things, leap ahead. Nice story: he is playing along on the piano with Randy Newman, and apologises because he is such a putz that he has to count. Randy looks at him and says: "Everybody counts!"
