Subject: English Folk and Barn Dance From: Wotcha Date: 08 Jul 02 - 09:47 PM I took a risk and bought a compilation CD called "English Folk and Barn Dance" which was looking forlorn in a oft overlooked CD rack ... glad I did and it made up for a solo peformance in Tarrant Langton, Dorset ... Cheezy as some of the songs are (The Linconlshire Poacher/John Peel) as well as the art work the performances are fantastic. The music includes some morris tunes and other instrumentals. Furthermore it is showcases performances by folks mentioned on the Mudcat but not generally available on CD: The Yetties, the Windjammers, The Blackwater Boys, and The English Country Dance Band. Ohh, Aaarh, proper job this one ... Cheers, Brian |

Subject: RE: English Folk and Barn Dance From: Liz the Squeak Date: 09 Jul 02 - 01:51 AM Hey - cheesy tunes and songs have a place - sooner or later (usually later) they stop being cheesy. And there is nearly always someone who hasn't heard them before. I've performed 'The Ash Grove' on occasion, cheesy in both tune and lyric, and yet, there were several who'd never heard it, and more who complained that we don't hear the old stuff any longer. Starting with the cheesy is a wedge (sorry) in the door, and you can use them as a springboard to other, more 'with it' stuff. And where are you that you get solo gigs in Tarrant Langton? LTS |

Marion and I really enjoyed meeting up with you again, shame it was such a short visit. The folks at the session really enjoyed your songs. hope you make it bck sometime. regards John |

Subject: RE: English Folk and Barn Dance From: Wotcha Date: 09 Jul 02 - 07:05 AM Liz: Try the Langton Arms (located at one of the many Tarrants just outside Blandford ... I was at a parents gathering for my daughter's school and one of the parents owns the pub ... so I had to sing [there was a barn dance going on next door]). John: I really had a great time -- Cadgwith was amazing on Tuesday (it's always nice to get a thumbs up from a local!). Take care and I'll post pics to your web site. Cheers, Brian |

Subject: RE: English Folk and Barn Dance From: Wotcha Date: 09 Jul 02 - 08:05 PM Peter: The liner notes indicate that Demon Music Group Inc., produces it (vintage 2000). E2CAT, MCI, Holden House, 57 Rathborne Place, London, W1N 9LF (www.vci.co.uk). E2 records have other titles, with presentable cover art: such as "The Best of Bluegrass," "Traditional Irish Fiddle Music," and "Southern Fried Boogie." The cheeziness is carried over on the artwork for "French Accordian Favourites ..."
