The article as a whole may have merit, but its introductory phrase (used as your link title) strikes me as presumptuous and condescending. How does the author know they don't understand country music? Maybe they just don't care for it (or certain segments of it) the way he does.

The answer to whether or not he article has merit is "Yes and no."

While it's true that, on commercial radio, Country Music ceased to exist years ago (they don't even bother diguising the 70's style pop stuff with fiddles anymore), the article seems to be pushing the idea that bluegrass is all that there is to Country Music. Country Music is as diverse and varried as the rural regions in which it was born. It's been through as many changes as the nation itself. There is a universe of difference between Uncle Dave Macon (the Opry's first "star") and Randy Travis, but it is unlikely that anybody would or could argue that one is "Country" and the other isn't.

like most of what is written about the genre it needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
