Subject: Lilies of France & Banks of Ireland From: sian, west wales Date: 02 Jul 02 - 04:26 PM A friend who's researching a book has asked if I can get her any info. on a tune called 'Lilies of France'. She's found it in a 1768 Welsh manuscript where it's called 'lilis frans'. I've found it mentioned once in the DigiTrad, but only a reference to 'Air: Lilies of France'. I've also found reference to it in some archive papers which mentions "a new song to the tune Lilies of France", but no more than that. So, can anyone help? She's also looking for information about a ballad tune called 'The Banks of Ireland'. In her words, "It was very popular in Wales from the 17th century on, usually under its Welsh name 'Bryniau Iwerddon' but I'm almost certain that it wasn't born in Wales. I'd love more information." I've found a bit more on that one, but if anyone has anything on this too ... it would be much appreciated! In eager anticipation, sian |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Lilies of France & Banks of Ireland From: sian, west wales Date: 03 Jul 02 - 04:09 AM Thanks so much for that, Malcolm. That's a huge help! Particularly the staff notation. It's interesting that Aird's A&M is c. 1780, my friend's is 1768, and one source I found looks to be c. 1765 - and that one is a 'new' song, so obviously the tune had pretty much settled into the common domain by then. I'll be seeing my friend this weekend and find out a bit more about how this cropped up in her research. I know it's connected with this history of Welsh folk music which she's writing for the University Press. Again, thanks. If anyone has anything to add, either about Lillies or Banks of Ireland, I'm all ears! I swear that Mudcat is like a bread machine, you throw in some bits and bobs before going to bed and wake up next morning to find something tasty ... ! sian

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Lilies of France & Banks of Ireland From: Declan Date: 03 Jul 02 - 06:09 AM There's a Reel called the Bank of Ireland. I always thought this is named after a building in Dublin, Headquarters of a financial institution, but maybe not. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Lilies of France & Banks of Ireland From: Declan Date: 03 Jul 02 - 06:36 AM That's the one, and I know the Barry Dransfield tune as well (to listen to). I think Gary has taken a little liberty here 'cause I think the Dransfield tune is called Blakey's and was named after his cat. Most of the people I know who play this tune call it "the Bank (singular) of Ireland". Funny how names can change like that. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Lilies of France & Banks of Ireland From: Declan Date: 04 Jul 02 - 05:04 AM Apologies for some misinformation given above. The name of the Barry Dransfield tune in the above link is Blakely's and it was named for Gary Blakely who plays it in the linked file. There is another tune by Barry Dransfield called Matey's which was named after his cat. The two are played together in a set appropriately called "The Cat & the Fiddler" on BDs "Wings of the Spynx" album. |
