Subject: New Words To Pledge of Allegiance (USA) From: GUEST,Frieda Mann Justice Date: 28 Jun 02 - 05:55 PM Without getting into the controversy over the constitutionality of the current USA pledge to the flag, I'm suggesting the following as substitute words that you can say, while others are saying the pledge, without anyone even noticing:
I fled your legions Frieda |

Subject: RE: New Words To Pledge of Allegiance (USA) From: Little Hawk Date: 28 Jun 02 - 10:12 PM Most of the little kids figure the "indivisible" part is the word "invisible". Interesting concept. A nation is, in a sense, an invisible entity after all...since it's a mental and emotional creation. - LH |

Subject: RE: New Words To Pledge of Allegiance (USA) From: Mrrzy Date: 01 Jul 02 - 10:06 AM I like the original best - I pledge allegiance to my flag, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty, equality, and justice for all. I don't pledge allegiance, but at least that one's not jingoistic. |
|
Subject: RE: New Words To Pledge of Allegiance (USA) From: Genie Date: 01 Jul 02 - 04:24 PM I like it too, Mrrzy, but I think folks are kidding themselves if they believe they are making children truly patriotic by having them recite it in school before they even understand what the words mean. Similarly, taking the later-added "under God" back out of the pledge will no more encourage children to be godless than leaving it in will make them religious. |

Subject: RE: New Words To Pledge of Allegiance (USA) From: GUEST,Just Amy Date: 01 Jul 02 - 04:37 PM Under God. Are you sure it is "under God"? I'm positive that isn't what we said when I was a kid. I thought it was dog. No, maybe that was my dyslexia........ |

Subject: RE: New Words To Pledge of Allegiance (USA) From: beadie Date: 02 Jul 02 - 12:23 PM My preference would be to replace the offending phrase with the words "under guard," in recognition of the anticipated condition once the new Homeland Security Department is up and running. |

Subject: RE: BS: New Words To Pledge of Allegiance (USA) From: Wincing Devil Date: 03 Jul 02 - 12:21 PM When I was in high scholl, I doctored the words to "dedicated to the principle of liberty and justice for all" because that's what I truly felt. |

Subject: RE: BS: New Words To Pledge of Allegiance (USA) From: TIA Date: 13 Dec 02 - 11:35 AM I think most little kids recite a Mondegreen instead of the actual pledge. Best I've seen was recalled by an Asian-american woman journalist (NPR?) who used to think it was... I pledge a lesson to the frog of the United States of America and to the wee puppets for witches hands one asian in the vestibule with little teas, and just rice for all I think this was in an autobiography, but I can't put my hands on it. |

Subject: RE: BS: New Words To Pledge of Allegiance (USA) From: Hollowfox Date: 13 Dec 02 - 12:14 PM When I was in high school, I started wondering about allegiance to a piece of cloth, so I added two little words: I pledge allegiance, not to the flag... and then But to the republic for which it stands. Nobody seemed to notice in the general morning mumble, but I take my oaths seriously. I've passed this suggestion on to my kids too, but I don't know if they use it. |

Subject: RE: BS: New Words To Pledge of Allegiance (USA) From: Bat Goddess Date: 13 Dec 02 - 12:54 PM Exactly, Hollowfox. Why would thinking people want to worship a flag? I remember when they stopped requiring the rote pledge recitation in school -- something about daily repetition causing no one to pay any attention to it and making it meaningless. Personally, I think the wording was pretty meaningless right from the beginning. I definitely prefer the "I pledge allegiance to the Consitution of the United States of America and in the Republic which it established: one Nation out of many Peoples with Liberty and Justice for all." as posted above. Subject: RE: BS: New Words To Pledge of Allegiance (USA) From: NicoleC Date: 13 Dec 02 - 01:35 PM Growing up as aJehovah's Witness, we weren't allowed to recite the Pledge because JH's perceive it as 1) idolatry and 2) pledging allegiance to a government instead of to God. Always made sense to me. But I do like that alternate version above. Why pledge to a piece of cloth? The symbol of the flag represents America, not the other way around. I also like the original, which was, "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and (to*) the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." |
|
Subject: RE: BS: New Words To Pledge of Allegiance (USA) From: beadie Date: 13 Dec 02 - 02:24 PM I'm sort of attached to the current wording, with one minor alteration. Instead of "under God," I find it more appropriate to insert "under guard." It seems to fit better, considering all the watching, reporting, chastising, and the like that accompany the recitation of this rather trite little ditty. |
