Subject: RE: Tune Req: Troika From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Jun 02 - 07:15 PM The only way I've seen that one is on a little 45rpm at folkdancing (and that was years ago, as the media suggests). Couldn't even hum a few bars now, I'm afraid. Good luck--it was a fun one to dance. SRS |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Troika From: masato sakurai Date: 17 Jun 02 - 11:11 PM There's a lot of tunes and songs with that name. A sorrowful song "There Flies the Mail Coach" has "troika" in its original title (Click here for lyrics & English translation; Click here for score). Some dance tunes are:
1. "Troika" on 20 Jukebox Party Dance Favorites
2. "Troika" on All the Best Folk Dances of the World; International Folk Dance Mixer; Russia; and Songs from Russia
3. "Polka - Troika" on Songs & Dances from Belorussia ~Masato |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Troika From: GUEST,Al Date: 18 Jun 02 - 10:45 AM The Troika is a Russian dance where you squat down and kick out your legs, among other things. A Russian fellow showed it to me recently. Our accordion player knew the tune that usually goes with the dance. It was in a minor key, but aside from that, I can't describe it. Al |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Troika From: M.Ted Date: 18 Jun 02 - 12:41 PM Check the JC's ABC tunefinder, so thoughtfully linked by Sorcha, and do a search, then download the PDF or GIF files and you'll get a printable lead sheet, with chords--if you want to hear the tune, download one of the others--you'll need an ABC program to listen, but it's freeware, and you should have it--(when I tried to download the MIDI's, nothing came up) |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Troika From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Jun 02 - 01:18 PM The version we danced was probably Bulgarian, because that's where most of our dances came from. And I should have remarked on the common occurance of the name. It's like asking someone if they've played "Prelude" without a composer, opus number, etc. Lots to go around. This turns out to have been a good question as far as getting a wide array of answers! SRS |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Troika From: M.Ted Date: 18 Jun 02 - 01:23 PM It's not Bulgarian, it's Russian, and the ABC/PDF/ etc can be found at JC's--I have played it in three or four different bands over the years-- |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Troika From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Jun 02 - 03:11 PM What we danced was probably "borrowed" and transformed in Bulgaria, because it didn't do the kicking that GUEST-Al described, either. It was very fast, almost running around the room with dance steps. Still about as vigorus a dance as I've ever experienced. At least, on the dance floor. . . ;-> SRS |
