Hi, Ya'll! Long time no visit-I've missed youse guys! I hope everyone has been well.

Does anyone have the lyrics to this song, often thought of as one that David Bromberg does, but it was done much earlier, I think by Bessie Smith. I did check digitrad, but it doesn't seem to be there.

I'll try checking back in a little while, and see if any of the "speed demons" are around, just waiting for a question they can answer so fast it makes your head spin! Thanks in advance, ya'll!

Love,

Anyone know more? Other recordings besides Bromberg? When I hear him sing it, I almost want to laugh. I'm sure I wouldn't if Bessie Smith was singing it....

It's on "The Essential Bessie Smith," Columbia 64922, 1997 re-issue; a 2-cd set, about $23.

Here's Bessie Smith's version:

SEND ME TO THE 'LECTRIC CHAIR
(New York, 3 Mar. 1927)

1 Judge judge please Mr judge : send me to the electric chair
2 Judge judge good Mr judge : let me go away from here
3 I want to take a journey : to the devil down below
4 I done killed my man : I want to reap just what I sow
5 Judge judge hear me judge : send me to the electric chair
6 Judge judge send me there judge : I love him so dear
7 I cut him with my ??? : I kicked him in the side
8 I stood there laughing over him : while he wobbled around and died
9 Judge judge sweet me judge : send me to the electric chair
10 Judge judge good kind judge : burn me because I don't care
11 I don't want no bonded man : to go my bail
12 I don't want : to spend no ninety-nine years in jail

("???": undeciphable passage ["barlow" in the lyrics Sorcha linked to])

Barlow was a sturdy jackknife. The Barlow family were cutlers.

Catspaw is an old Mudcat Radio joke?

(Just kidding; I know the underwear joke, but I couldn't resist!)

Being a lawyer when I'm not singing, I add this verse when I play Lectric Chair:

Pull up you robe, Judgie. Pull down your shorts. I'm going to show you what it means to be a Friend of the Courts!

Hoyt Axton did a fine version of this. It was on an LP that pictured him jumping off a freight train I think. Should this song be the Texas National Anthem? (Just a joke....I apologize to Texan Mudcatters. Many of my favorite friends and musicians are Texans. By the way, why are there so damn many great songwriters from that state?) Anyhow, I always dug Hoyt.

I've always sung ' I stabbed her with my Bowie and kicked her in the side then I stood there laughin at her till she wriggled around and died .

And the last verse begins 'I don't want no moneyman to go and stand my bail ,I don't want to spend no 99 years in no jail.

And I usually end with the ' Good Evening friends' tag but sing 'I wanna fry'

Martin

Another pleasant Mudcat coincidence. I've been listening to Tracy Nelson (the little lady with the big voice) do this song and thought it would be a nice addition to my own repertoire.

In the 60's or 70's there was an English rocker who played organ. His name escapes me now, but he did a rollicking version of this song.

Any songwriting credits here?

I learned it from George Melly doing his Bessie Smith impersonation.
Thanks to Mudcat I now sing "Barlow" not "Bowie".

Mike Cooper did a great version (with Derek Hall on guitar) on his 1969 album Oh Really!? on Janus records in USA and Pye in UK
