Subject: Evening songs requested From: GUEST,Walking Eagle Date: 02 Jun 02 - 02:11 PM Hidy 'catter critters, I've taken to grabbing the nearest dulcimer in the morning when I get up. I play some simple little morning greeting tunes just to start the day. Can any of you provide some simple evening songs? Lyrics and fret numbers would be sufficient. I can build my own chord structures. Thanks a bunch! W.E.

Subject: RE: Help: Evening songs requested From: Liz the Squeak Date: 02 Jun 02 - 03:05 PM What sort of format do you want? There's a lovely 'gospel' that has the tag line 'cool of the day', about meeting with God whilst walking 'in the cool of the day', or there's the hymn, 'The day thou gavest Lord is ended', lots of potential harmonies in that... Kum ba yah has it's merits, if you pick the right verses and do it slowly..... LTS |

Subject: RE: Help: Evening songs requested From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 03 Jun 02 - 12:03 AM Thanks, Mary, for getting the clickie to Golden Bells. I am posting here because "The Day is Past and Gone" gives Web Publishing Error. |

Subject: RE: Help: Evening songs requested From: Genie Date: 03 Jun 02 - 12:56 AM Well, there's always "Taps." *G* [If you don't know that one, I can post the lyrics and chords. You can play most of it on a guitar with only one hand.]
Then there's the old [minstrel?] song, *The original lyric was "...those darkies...". You can substitute whatever you want if you want to be PC. Then, if we really move out of the folk category, my favorite evening songs are "Twilight Time" and "Deep Purple." It'd be interesting to hear someone play those two on a dulcimer. Genie |

Subject: RE: Help: Evening songs requested From: Genie Date: 03 Jun 02 - 01:15 AM W.E., I don't know if you're into Israeli songs, but there is a beautiful song from "The Song Of Songs" ("Song Of Solomon") called "Erev Shel Shoshanim" ("Evening of Roses"). I can't do a MIDI for you, but the chords are pretty easy (Em, AM, and D, as I recall). It would be a lovely melody to play at evening time. Genie |

Subject: RE: Help: Evening songs requested From: GUEST,Walking Eagle Date: 03 Jun 02 - 12:31 PM Thanks for the help folks. I like simple songs, but not the lulleby types. Now, if someone can just provide some fret numbers... |

|
Subject: RE: Help: Evening songs requested From: Willa Date: 03 Jun 02 - 04:57 PM Alex; The words to 'Taps' (as far as I remember) are Days is done, gone the sun, From the sea, from the hills, from the sky. All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. It's a very simple tune. |
|
Subject: RE: Help: Evening songs requested From: Genie Date: 04 Jun 02 - 01:33 AM Alex & Willa, The way I've always sung "Taps" (and heard it sung is the same as Willa posted, except for
"...From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky."
I was wrong about playing it with one hand, but you can play the whole thing with only a C chord. *"E" is the E below middle C; "E2" is the E above middle C.

Subject: RE: Help: Evening songs requested From: Kenny B (inactive) Date: 07 Dec 03 - 06:49 AM How about this one, there are other versions Now the Day is Over Now the day is over, night is drawing nigh Shadows of the evening steal across the sky Now the darkness gathers, stars begin to peep Birds and beasts and flowers soon will be asleep Grant to all the weary, calm and sweet repose With the kindest blessing, may our eyelids close Grant to those who suffer rest and balm in thee Guard the sailors tossing on the deep blue sea When the morning wakens, then may I arise Pure and fresh and hopeful, sunrise in my eyes |

Subject: RE: Help: Evening songs requested From: GUEST,Big Jim from Jackson Date: 07 Dec 03 - 11:50 AM Get a copy of Gordon Bok doing "John O' Dreams" from Folk-Legacy Records. I don't know if it is as simple as you want, but it is an extrodinary song. Others have recorded it, as well. |

Subject: RE: Help: Evening songs requested From: Zorg Date: 07 Dec 03 - 12:23 PM Yes 'John the Dreams' is a truely great song for evenings. Lyrics by Bill Caddick with a little help from Tchaikovski Symphony No.6 'The Pathetique' |

Subject: RE: Help: Evening songs requested From: YorkshireYankee Date: 07 Dec 03 - 06:53 PM There's a lovely round -- "Oh How Lovely is the Evening": Oh, How lovely is the evening, is the evening When the bells are sweetly singing, sweetly singing Ding dong, ding dong, ding dong... Do you know the tune? (afraid I don't write music, so I don't know what the notes are -- maybe someone else can help?) It's fairly common, so maybe one of your friends knows it & could sing it for you. Cheers, YY |

Subject: RE: Help: Evening songs requested From: Stewie Date: 07 Dec 03 - 07:29 PM Billy Joe's Shaver's 'Hill Country Love Sings' refers also to morning, but its mood is very evening. Robin and Linda Williams did a lovely cover of it. HILL COUNTRY LOVE SONG (Billy Joe Shaver) When the morning sun comes peepin' o'er the mountain And nature's melody begins to play I wonder how a song that seems to be so short and sweet Could be as good again another day Oh I loved you with a passion hot as summer And I picked you when you were as fresh as spring I held you when the autumn wind blew in the winter cold And warmed you till the meadow turned to green Now the evening sun is sinking, movin' homeward As I bid another peaceful day goodbye Our home is on the south side of an old hill country town Nestled here beneath the Texas sky And, when you touch my hand, I know that you still love me And I know you know I'll always feel the same Till every season's day has come and gone, and come and gone And come and gone, and come and gone again Source: transcription from Billy Joe Shaver 'Salt of the Earth' Lucky Dog CK 61494. --Stewie. |
