Subject: are there 2 mc forums?
From: Mr Happy
Date: 22 May 02 - 10:30 AM

since the mc down crisis afew days ago, i've had ragtime.org on my favo[u]rites to get the forum quickly.

comparing mudcat.org with ragtime.org shows discrepancies between latest postings

explanations?

ps i've posted this to the ragtime one as well

The Mudcat Forums are the same. They get merged at some point in time. It really is the same Forum. They both keep a copy and sooner or later will combine into one.

There are several servers which comprise "Mudcat" and they synchronize and backup each other's content. Sometimes there's a lag in the synchronization, I expect.

If you go to "http://help.mudcat.org" and post this question in a thread there, you will probably get the correct technical answer -- that is the only "separate" forum, and it's meant for technical bugs, problem reports, and help requests of a technical nature. The only other part is the development area for piloiting new features, which isn't part of the forum.

That may be it, but what you've actually done is run 'Create a new Thread' twice and given them both the same name. I imagine youl'd get the same effect whether you did this on just one of the servers. Let's not try it, folks!

As far as I'm aware, although there are several servers, there is only one database and messages from shorty, ragtime, etc are all posted immediately to the database server.

The only discrepancies I am aware of occur in the messages since last visit section. My guess at the reason for this occuring is that the servers are not in sync with one onther in clock settings.

Thinking a little further, assuming there are time discrepancies between the shorty, ragtime, et. all, i'd guess other descrepancies could exist depending on how a post is timestamped. This could perhaps automatically be done by the database on the creation of the new record but could also be created at other times ,e.g. using a "now()" type function on the individual servers.

"You can't get de'ja vu a first time" -Les Barker unfortunately it's not quoted Here but Les's "Daschunds with erections", or "Reg, The lonely glow worm" are well worth reading!

Nigel

To avoid De'ja Vu, I'm not posting this on the duplicate thread!

Mr. Happy - it really all just goes to the same place - but sometimes WHAT YOU SEE doesn't match exactly - due to various arcane and mystical things that only computer internet techno-geeks really understand. so just pay no attention to the elves and clones behind the curtain (except to thank them) and enjoy the results.

My guess it has to do with cookies -- those wonderful, magical things you get with mudcat membership. Not sure how it works, but a cookie traces your movement on a particular server (that's how Amazon.com can recommend books to you, because your cookie there tells them what books you've checked out in the past. And that's why, when you're in mudcat, threads with no new messages since your last visit show up in purple).

But as I said, cookies only work within a particular server (I think). Ragtime and Shorty are on different servers -- like a left and right hand on one person. Mudcat is the one person but the Ragtime hand doesn't know what the Shorty hand is doing... But Mudcat is ambidexterous ;-) if the shorty thumb gets smashed with a hammer, the ragtime hand can get the job done (usually -- and even when down, Mudcat heals pretty darned quick)...

Nothing to do with cookies CapriUni. The only thing the cookie here does is to send your memberID to Mudcat (along with other HTTP information). There is no tracing or anything esle.

The link colour changing is nothing mysterious. It works in the same way that all visited links work - you browser and your cache. The reason it works is because the URL contains the number of messages in the thread (&messages=xxx). The one drawback of this system (I use it too BTW) is it fills your browser's cache up - have a look sometime, if you have viewed a thread as it's grown in posts, you'll probably have several saved versions.

The cookie works accross the Mudcat domain. If that wasn't the case, the first time you used each server, loki, ragtime, etc, you would have to do a new login/reset cookie.

How about just enjoying the music threads instead of playing with the Mudcat?
