Subject: are there 2 mc forums? From: Mr Happy Date: 22 May 02 - 10:26 AM since the mc down crisis afew days ago, i've had ragtime.org on my favo[u]rites to get the forum quickly. comparing mudcat.org with ragtime.org shows discrepancies between latest postings explanations? |

Subject: RE: are there 2 mc forums? From: DMcG Date: 22 May 02 - 10:30 AM I think its just a timing issue, combined with caching in the browser. They seem to get back in sync when you refresh. |

Subject: RE: are there 2 mc forums? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 22 May 02 - 12:15 PM GUEST,Davetnova: It looks as if you were confused, and connected with "ragtime.org", which is unrelated to Mudcat. Mudcat runs on three machines, named Shorty (the main one), Loki, and Ragtime. Entering "www.mudcat.org" gets you to Shorty. Entering "www.loki.mudcat.org" gets you to Loki. Entering "www.ragtime.mudcat.org" gets you to ragtime. Loki and Ragtime also allow you to access the forum, but my experience is that certain of the other functions of the Mudcat complex are not accessible on those two machines. Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: are there 2 mc forums? From: Watson Date: 22 May 02 - 12:20 PM Shurely that's wrong! A few wwws too many - it should be loki.mudcat.org and ragtime.mudcat.org for the mirror sites. |

Subject: RE: are there 2 mc forums? From: Bill D Date: 22 May 02 - 03:38 PM all it is is 3 different machines sitting on Max's dining room table, and a script to try to share the load between them |

Subject: RE: are there 2 mc forums? From: M.Ted Date: 22 May 02 - 05:00 PM Funny though--from time to time, there have been threads that showed up on one machine and not the others-- |

Subject: RE: are there 2 mc forums? From: JohnInKansas Date: 23 May 02 - 02:51 AM Mr Happy (& M.Ted) When you connect to any site on the web, the "page" may be downloaded and stored on your machine as a "Temporary Internet File." If you do a "go back," sometimes your machine will read the temp file it already has, rather than looking to see if there's a newer version. When you go to a new site (or a different one of the "mirrors" on mudcat) you will almost always download the current version. It sounds like the "discrepancies" described above may be due to comparing what one site looked-like-when-you-hooked-up (from your temp file) with the current version that you got when you switched to the other one. If you've been wandering around on the 'cat for a while, it's probably a good idea to hit the "refresh" button occasionally to see if you're looking at the "latest." If you're using Internet Explorer, on the Tools Menu, Internet Options, General Tab, you can click Settings in the section for Temporary Internet Files and select "check for newer versions every visit to page" to force a little more frequent update - but you'll still occasionaly get "old news." Subject: Only One Forum From: Joe Offer Date: 23 May 02 - 03:25 AM Hi, Mr. Happy - I combined your new thread with the existing one. Generally, we have only one thread on a topic running at a time. The entire Forum is held on one computer, but there are several servers which channel the information from the one computer to the Internet. The servers Mudcatters access are Shorty, Loki, Ragtime, and Dharma. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: BS: are there 2 mc forums? From: GUEST,Davetnova Date: 23 May 02 - 03:33 AM Uncle DaveO, Watson - thanks thats cleared things up a bit I was confused. I love Mudcat I look in nearly every day and love both the humour and the depth of knowledge. Not to mention the caring atmosphere among the members. I would/will join but from home ( where I rarely get time to get on the net) not from work (where I do). I also love music but with my talent I am destined to be a beginner forever. |

Subject: RE: BS: are there 2 mc forums? From: Jeri Date: 23 May 02 - 10:09 AM Jon explained it pretty well - one database and several servers to access it. The only thing that will be different are things specific to each server, such as the time stamp. The HTML of the pages is identical and the one database always has the same data, but the servers are different. A copy of the same message sent to the ONE database from each server will show up as several identical messages (and probably all but one will be deleted). When you post, nobody can tell which server you're using because the message they see comes out of the ONE database. Re time stamps: When I was playing "beat the clock" on how fast I could post a clicky for song lyrics, I'd know which server had the clock set back the farthest. It never worked that well for me as there wasn't a big difference in times whenever I found myself in a position to post a link quickly, and switching to another server takes time too. |

Subject: RE: BS: are there 2 mc forums? From: Jon Freeman Date: 23 May 02 - 08:47 PM Juest reading again... Bill, I have a feeling that Max did try to use round robin DNS at one time but I'm not sure there are any scripts in place to try to balance the load now - I think we just get the server we request (with www mapping to shorty). I could be wrong though. Jon |
