Subject: Mudcat problems?
From: C-flat
Date: 15 May 02 - 02:57 PM

For the past two days I've been unable to connect to Mudcat despite trying every alternative route I could think of. Has anyone else had similar problems or is the problem at my end? I was begining to panic in case Mudcat had "switched off" somehow but when I got here just now all seems normal. I had no problem accessing any other site except Mudcat and could only get a message that meant absolutely nothing to me, something about a False Waste Pipe (not those words exactly but about as much sense)

Same problem, C-Flat...

I was beginning to experience 'Cat Withdrawal'... most unsettling...

Welcome back !

M.

cflat, if you click on HELP, up above and look at the threads there, you will see it happened to all of us...*bg*...if you bookmark that site, you can usually access it when all else fails. There is also a link to Jon Freeman's Annexe, which many of us visit when Mudcat is down..keeps us going...THANKS JON!

C-Flat:

If you look at the post times for most recent threads, you'll see that the 'cat was - indeed - down for about a day. From 6:15 May 14 to about an hour ago, no one posted anything.

We hope it was just for maintenance, and that all is well at the home.

John

C-flat,
For future reference, you can get some information (or commiserate with other withdraweeees) at Jon's Annexe --an alternate site that Jon Freeman graciously set up for Cat overflow and discussion of 'other topics'.

Same problem. It took me several hours to get on yesterday. Today I've been trying every half hour or so since about 8:30 this morning and I just got on. I'm glad we're still here.

Thanks Katlaughing and Jenellen for the "jon's Annexe" site. I've just had a look around and it seems a nice place to go when you're 'catless!

The BIG problem with the Mudcat is habituation. No-one knows what it is about the site that causes this; but it is fairly uniform in affect, does not discriminate based on age or gender, is probably not an aerosol-mediated infection but may be caused by subliminal pixel patterns cleverly woven into the catfish logo. Anyone who wishes to add peer-reviewed, methodologically sound information to the research base on this issue is welcome to post it here. (Translation: make a rectal pluck and let fly; no-one will know the difference!). :>)

Very very glad you're back, 'Cat!!

A

The server must be related to Marvin, the Paranoid Android from Hitchhiker's Guide -- read the whole message.

Amos, I think only a few of us more technically minded 'catters are likely to understand the complexities of "subliminal pixel patterns" and "Aerosol mediated infections". So if I might suggest that we all have a puff on YOUR funny cigarette to bring everyone up to speed! C'mon pass it around!

Damn damn damn damn! The cat is back up and I have to attend to my spiritual obligations... midweek meeting... Damn, I am going to be sitting in silence wondering if the cat is off down the alley again! Thee must try very hard to be a good cat and not run away while I am at meeting! Friends, keep an eye on the cat and I will be back shortly (I know, i should not say damn... but folks also tell me I should not say F*ckssake ... but I must remind thee that we Quakers where maritime folks and a colorfull lot...) KEEP THE CAT HOME TILL I GET BACK!!!!!!!!!! Larry

No seriously, I sometimes wonder at how much I'd get done if I didn't come here...and I *skim*! I cannot imagine how completely organized some of you more regular types must be on order to maintain lives and post here.

I too had the Digital Tradition withdrawals (DT's)

What would lead you to believe we're organized ???

But seriously folks - It would be nice if Max, Joe or Dick, or whoever, could post telling us that the 'Cat was down, and no I don't want a tec' discussion. It just that I thought the problem lay with my machine, and having cleared software and reinstaled I feel a littlebit of a banana.

Truly, what helped me - made me feel almost like the world was normal- was going to both the Mudcat Help and Trouble Forum and to the Annexe. In the past I didn't have them bookmarked- and when the 'Cat is down is NOT a good time to be reminded!

This time I almost immediately went to Jon's Annexe, and was consoled. (Thanks, Jon! Good site.) After that I was able to go about my day's business without a care. So, bookmark those sites NOW and you'll be ready for the inevitable next time.

:)

The Annexe

It's a shame that some people only use the Annexe when Mudcat is down.

It's a great site in its own right. There are no flames there either.

Guest, I have no problems with the idea that the Annexe gets a lot more use when Mudcat is down and I feel lucky in the fact I've not had any flame wars - I could get them but I feel some flames here are grievances over music vs bs)...

When I'd set the Annexe up, I don't think I'd ever seen myself as being a back up, it was more (apart from my own desire for a web site which I could program) to try to address problems here such as the Healing threads and to perhaps include new areas of common interest without further filling Mudcat up with non-music.

Overall, I've been delighted with the support the Annexe has had - it far more than beat my expectations which had it dead in a couple of weeks as no-one here would want to try another area away from the main forum.

Jon

Good to be back. Thank you, Jon for the Annexe. As to Kendall's new life: he isn't kidding. He is driving around Maine in a new car sporting LED ZEPPELIN glow in the dark decals. Poor man has gone over the edge. It's a shame MattR isn't here to share the moment.

All I'd be interested in hearing from the management is some recognision of how we all missed MudCat! I don't think that this modern trend of explaining the cause of a problem is much use. I don't really have much interest in hearing whether MudCat's SQL Server fell over because tempdb filled up, or whatever the cause was. If, on the other hand, some upgrade is needed, then let us all know and we can then decide whether to contribute to the cost.

The usual statements apply. This is Max's baby, he fixes it as and when he can. The sheer relief in these threads shows how much we value it and how important a service it is to us. Just do what you can, "Management", its good enough for me!

Every time the Cat is down the Annexe picks up a few more members. Some of them find a topic they like and keep posting there once the Cat is back. If it sticks around long enough, I think eventually more and more of the non-music will go there.

thanks for the Help & Annex links. As a luddite with a laptop who takes problems into work the next day for answers from my technically inclined colleagues, I need all the help I can get when I can't have my daily dose of Mudcat.

I was twitching & withdrawing badly. But now I feel better with 2 new bookmarks.
