Subject: I really want to do something new! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 09 May 02 - 07:08 PM But how do I go about it??? I know I can get a technical consultancy job most places but do I really want to? I am pretty pissed where I am and was considering a move but would I just be changing like for like? I know I can organise folk events - I have done it free for 20 years! I know I can make and repair things (All sorts - don't ask!) But how do I make money out of it? I am paid a fair bit for doing computer stuff (but still can't make ends meet!) How can I drop out of that market and get into something I really enjoy? How can I keep the family in the life they have become acustomed to? I would envisage myself promoting concerts, fixing old computers and making art forms out of junk!!! Any advice? Any experiences? Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: BS: I really want to do something new! From: Amos Date: 09 May 02 - 07:33 PM Well, man, I can offer sympathetic vibrations, since I get paid a good bit for putting up with incredible piles of bureaucratic bullshit pretending to be software development practices. Maybe we could work up a deal where you make your living organizing, and then attending, end-to-end Mudcat gatherings around the planet. Doesn't do much for the college tuition though... If you could leap into full bloom as a rock concert impresario it might make all the difference, but of course this isn't Haight Ashbury. Try writing the Great American Novel? Takes a looong time. The most return for effort would be writing or recording the next Truly Great American Song. I'd focus on that if Iwere you; one really good pass at that and you can kiss your sysadmin goodbye! A |

Subject: RE: BS: I really want to do something new! From: Bobert Date: 09 May 02 - 07:36 PM Cut expenses is a good start. If that is possible then you can do consulting part time thus freeing up time for dabbling with the promoting and/or dadaist (junk) art. And not to sound to much like the 70's: Go for it! |

Subject: RE: BS: I really want to do something new! From: hesperis Date: 09 May 02 - 11:12 PM Hmmmm.... I seem to have lost the annexe... where is it, again? Yes, go for it! Amos - do you like adventure/RPG computer games? How about working with a completely volunteer team, pretending to make progress? (At least we won't shove "software development practices" down your throat. *g*) |

Subject: RE: BS: I really want to do something new! From: Amos Date: 09 May 02 - 11:32 PM Hes -- Thanks awfully, but I am really not young enough to surrender myself to volunteers -- um, I mean voluntary activities -- sorry! -- because ihave this challenge of getting another rising young star through college while keeping a roof over our heads; otherwise you'd see me hitchhiking in to town with a double-baggie of vitamins! LOL! Thanks! A |

Subject: RE: BS: I really want to do something new! From: bflat Date: 09 May 02 - 11:38 PM If you don't already have a year's expenses saved than begin saving; cut back as needed; once done, embark on your dream. You owe it to yourself to do that. This is not a rehersal. You will be amazed at your staying power in your current situation if you are working towards a goal. Your future will unfold before you. I believe most of us know the direction to go for our work. The family needs to care about your fulfillment as well as their needs. Lots of luck. Ellen |

Subject: RE: BS: I really want to do something new! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 10 May 02 - 03:30 PM I could see my belly dancing quite well on it's own! I wonder if it would pay me royalties??? I like the idea of cutting expenses and going part time - maybe that is the way to go. Got me thinking as well. I am charged out by my company at £X per day. I get nowhere near 'X' that of course. I wonder if they would wear me quitting and then charging them, say, £X/2 a day? If so I could work 2 days per week and still get the same wage!!! Hmmmm Thanks for the advice to date guys - keep 'em coming. BTW - anyone want to hire a professional festival attendee? I will bring my own concertina case, silly hat and pewter tankard. I can applaud in all the right places and even be coherant on occasion. Well, before lunch anyway;-) Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: BS: I really want to do something new! From: CapriUni Date: 10 May 02 - 03:46 PM Just had a thought, oh gnomish one: Would you be willing to apply your festival organizing skills in other fields (say, helping with things like business conventions)? Sure, the end result may not be as much fun, but the process of getting there would be similiar (I imaginine), and the brain is happiest, I think, when it gets a chance to do what it does best. And you'd be more likely to get steady work doing it... And you might just meet some other folkies that just happen to be disguised as businessmen... |

Subject: RE: BS: I really want to do something new! From: annamill Date: 10 May 02 - 04:30 PM BOY, DO I KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT!!!! I have been doing the commuter/computer consulting thing for 19 years and BOY, DO I KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT!!! I have a light at the end of the tunnel, thank goodness! I started a small video store that has been doing OK for just about a year. I just started working as a Real Estates Salesperson and I'm in the learning process and should be doing ok in about another year. I'm looking for small businesses out in San Diego because in October of 2003, we will sell the store, I will quit my job, if not before, and we are moving out to CA, build a small business, and I will do real estate and spend time on the beach. I am very motivated! You need a plan. You have to stick to it. Before you know it (I hope), you're where you want to be. In the last year, I've come to a wonderful conclusion. I'd rather be poor and happy, then rich and dead. GOOD LUCK TO BOTH OF US DAVE. Love, annamill |
