Subject: Please Make My Wife Cry For Mother's Day From: YOR Date: 08 May 02 - 11:46 PM Calling all Mudcatters! I really need to make my wife 'Sue' or 'Susan' cry on Mother's Day. You see she loves to cry. How? By giving her a printout of this thread. This past weekend May 3-5 Friday-Sunday my wife was in the 'Avon Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk'. Downtown Baltimore to downtown DC, about 60 miles. She trained for months and she finished the walk, YES!. All walkers had to raise $1900 to qualify for the walk. She raised about $2400 plus. She started 8 months ago with form letters to family, friends and neighbors. Her company chipped in too. She had qualified by early December. She said she was going to do it, and that was all that was needed. I'm so proud of her, everyone is. In all, 2415 walkers raised 6.76 Million dollars (net). Over 500 all volunteer staff, and about 20,000 of us greeting them in DC for the finish and closing ceremony. About 125 breast cancer survivors did the walk. No one knew who they were until the last minute parade when they changed thier shirts from blue to pink. Regreatable 248 women died of breast cancer nation wide during that 3 day walk. The Boston walk is this weekend I think. I wish I had the website handy. I'll look that up and post tomorrow. Sue's doing the walk again next year. She loved it so much. And did she cry, OH YEAH! Now I know the Mudcatters have something to say to Sue. Thanks, With Love! Roy |

Subject: RE: Please Make My Wife Cry For Mother's Day From: Ian Date: 09 May 02 - 07:33 AM One day, when I was a freshman in highschool, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd." I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives." He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me,so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before. We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends. He said yes. We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him. Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said,"Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!" He just laughed and handed me half the books. Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, w e began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship. Kyle was valedictorian of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak. Graduation day, I saw Kyle. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses. He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him. Boy, sometimes I was jealous. Today was one of those days. I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!" He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled. "Thanks," he said. As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I am going to tell you a story." I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable." I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize it's depth. Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life. For better or for worse. God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way. Look for God in others. You now have two choices, you can: 1) Pass this on to your friends or 2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart. As you can see, I took choice number 1. "Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly." There is no beginning or end..Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is mystery. Today is a gift. |

Subject: RE: Please Make My Wife Cry For Mother's Day From: Bobert Date: 09 May 02 - 09:40 AM Bless you, Sue. October 2nd will be the 5th anniversary of my wife, Judy's, passing from breast cancer. The researchers are close but not quite there to having treatments for this horrific disease that are less barbaric and mutilating. So it is wonderful to hear that so many folks are carrying the torch, not only for those who may be affected in the future but also for memories of those who have lost the battle. Again, bless you... Subject: RE: Please Make My Wife Cry For Mother's Day From: SharonA Date: 09 May 02 - 11:40 AM Hooray for you, Sue!!!!! So many of us know people who've had this terrible disease (and some who've died of it). For me, it was Elaine, a co-worker who had been a heavy smoker and had quit before I knew her. She was one of the most vivacious, outgoing ladies I knew, always ready with a helping hand, never afraid to speak her mind. She had had breast-cancer surgery and treatment and was in remission. She was preparing for retirement, looking forward to spending more time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren (and coping with a mother with Alzheimer's) when the cancer struck again, this time spreading through her body and all too quickly taking her life. It was hard to believe that someone so full of life could die. So thank you, Sue, for all your hard work to raise money to find the treatments and cures that will keep this from happening to other women. You go, girl! Sharon P.S. – Andrés, I'll be keeping you and your wife in my thoughts, too, and hoping for the best result of that biopsy. Sí, un abrazo. |

Subject: RE: Please Make My Wife Cry For Mother's Day From: DonD Date: 09 May 02 - 02:24 PM I wipe tears from my eyes to congratulate Sue and wish Andres good news. I've just come to this thread from a stop at thebreastcancersite.org and I urge everyone to visit it daily just to click on their counter because their sponsors endow free mammograms for needy woman based on their number of visitors. It's free, no cookies (I think) and no solicitations (well, only gentle ones) but a simple way to help. Easier than walking sixty miles, for sure. I lost two friends to breast cancer quite a few years ago and I still can't get through that chorus that say: 'no matter what you've lost - a home, a love, a friend ...' without choking up. |

Subject: RE: Please Make My Wife Cry For Mother's Day From: Murph10566 Date: 09 May 02 - 02:45 PM Congratulations and Thanks, Susan ! My sister is a Breast Cancer Survivor, and the research that your heroic walk is helping to fund could certainly provide the answer to the Cure someday - For some 'Catters who might care to help out in a small way (My old legs wouldn't survive such a walk), the US Post Office offers a special stamp: It's a first class postage stamp priced about 11 cents more than one might usually pay - the excess going directly to fund Breast Cancer Research... "Fund the Fight - Find the Cure !" Regards, M. |

Subject: RE: Please Make My Wife Cry For Mother's Day From: Celtic Soul Date: 09 May 02 - 07:59 PM On behalf of all the unnamed and unknown women who suffer, thank you, Sue. Thanks for taxing your personal time and energies to aid people who will likely never know of your contributions. Thank you for selflessly caring about the health and well being of people you have never met. And thanks to you, Roy, for letting us know of your wifes efforts. It's roll models such as your wife that teach better than anything what is most important...the doing, not the talking. Time to back up my own words with some actions. Thanks for the reminder, the both of you. |

Subject: RE: Please Make My Wife Cry For Mother's Day From: SINSULL Date: 10 May 02 - 10:26 AM Thank you, Sue! I had my scare. Friends were not so lucky. One died four years ago after an incredible battle - she went to work EVERYDAY during her chemo because she needed to keep busy. She survived the "five year" test but had a recurrence in her sixth year of remission. Two others are handling their cancers now. One has chosen to do nothing - an option now available although I admit I don't understand the rational. The other is a woman in her sixties who opted for chemo and plans to be around for her grandson's (now 4) wedding. Thank you from all of us. Mary |

My mother and her mother both found the lumps in time; my grandmother's sister did not, and died before I was born. My daughter is named after her. I've had no problems yet, and I make use of mammograms, etc. to make sure it stays that way. You are an inspiration to us all, both by being a survivor and having the wherewithall to make that walk. |

Subject: RE: Please Make My Wife Cry For Mother's Day From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 11 May 02 - 06:32 AM Congratulations to both of you -- it sounds like you deserve each other! My mother lost a breast to cancer, and the prognosis wasn't good. The doctor told my father (but not my mother) that the cancer would almost certainly come back and she probably had six months to live. My father decided not to tell her (or anyone else) and determined to make her as happy as possible for as long as she had left. The cancer did return, but through his love and her strength he kept her alive for SEVENTEEN YEARS!! Even through times of terrible pain she never lost her will to live, and just before the end I can still see her surrounded by her children and grandchildren, happy and contented, the pain finally behind her, ready at last to go. This is making me cry as I write it, so it damn well better make you cry, Susan! Good luck (and some of my mother's strength) to you both. BJ |

Subject: RE: Please Make My Wife Cry For Mother's Day From: Willa Date: 11 May 02 - 09:06 AM Coincidence or serendipity? I received this by email a few days ago, and though I've never sent on a chain email before, this seemed just right. From: Dodd, Julie Sent: Thursday, 2 May 2002 " Tomorrow Is Not Promised, Make The Best Of Today!! " In honor of women's history month and in memory of Erma Bombeck who lost her fight with cancer. Here is an angel sent to watch over you. Pass this on to five women that you want watched over. If you don't know five women to pass this on to, one will do just fine. IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER - by Erma Bombeck (written after she found out she was dying from cancer.)
I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.
I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime. .

Subject: RE: Please Make My Wife Cry For Mother's Day From: Yvonne Date: 11 May 02 - 04:31 PM Hey Sue, Well done--a wonderful achievement. I had a 'scare' five years ago and luckily was clear. After it I volunteered to join in a drug research investigation which involved a small biopsy afterwards for analysis. Like all these things--you never find out the outcome--but I know the research behind it was to discover how important antioxidants were in the prevention of breast cancer. My 'help' was very small in comparison to your walk and the money people raise is so important to finance research into this insidious desease. Well done again and many thanks. Diz Cheshire |

Subject: RE: Please Make My Wife Cry For Mother's Day From: Troll Date: 12 May 02 - 12:03 AM Congrats Sue. This thread is especially pertinant to me since the Memsahib is a breast cancer survivor. She had a high stage three by the time it was discovered and the prognosis was lousy. But she endured the chemo and radiation and their attendant effects and recovered. Her hair grew back and her energy returned.(groan) Then, last Feb., she noticed a lump on a rib just below the collar bone. They did x-rays and a bone scan. No cancer on the bone, but there was an anomaly on the x-ray in one lung. The cat-scan showed only some enlarged lymph nodes in her chest so a pet-scan was ordered. For those unfamiliar with this scan,it traces the metabolization of glucose. It seems that tumors really suck up the glucose. The pet-scan showed a tumor and the oncologist said that she had cancer, the only thing was, they didn't know what kind so they didn't know how to treat is. Two needle biopsies later, they still didn't know so they decided to go into the thorasic cavity and remove the largest lymph node. This was done and the surgeon carried the node up to pathology. The pathologist cut it open, took a look and said,"there's no cancer in here." Turns out she has a disease call sarcoidia -an auto-immune disease- and the nodules act just like cancerous tumors in a pet-scan. We learned this on May 1, which was our 20th anniversary. Best damn present I ever got. During this time, we participated in a 24 hr. cancer walk in Williston, Fl, the town where she teaches. It was meaningful then. It is more meaningful now, when I think of how she was mentally preparing to go through the whole thing again. These fund raisers are vital. God bless everyone who helps. troll |
