Subject: Sukiyake From: paddymac Date: 30 Apr 02 - 01:20 PM After a few pints in a session a couple of weeks ago, one of the guitar players started noodling around with "Sukiyake". Never having played it before, I was much suprised when I started hammering it out on the dulcimer. We all stumbled when no one could recall the second part. The following Monday, I called a band mate who works in the University Music Library and asked him to find the music for it. He called back a few hours later with a great history of the song, but had been unable to find the music for it. I've looked for it on the net, but without success, and found Rick's post and responses in the supoer search (after several attempts, with "suk*". I'd be most appreciative if some one here could advise how and where to find "the dots." Thanks. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Sukiyake From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 30 Apr 02 - 08:19 PM I found a midi on this page. My Cakewalk will let me see it but not print it. I'll transcribe it for you if nobody with Noteworthy or a later version of Cakewalk can. Also, I found ~168 midis when I put "suk" in the Midi Search Engine at http://www. musicrobot.com (Some are not sukiyaki, but I didn't check them out.) I'd like to see the words and a translation for this one. Also, if someone can explain a bit about the scale used for this song...it sounds Japanese, but is it the pentatonic scale or what? |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Sukiyake From: Jack Campin Date: 25 May 08 - 06:00 AM Do you all mean "Sakura"? An ABC search for that will give you a few versions. If so, it's in the in-sen scale - phrygian with a gap at the third, sixth gap on rising phrases and seventh gap on falling ones. I just added it to my modes tutorial as it makes the point more simply than the example I had already. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Sukiyake From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 25 May 08 - 07:42 AM If we're talking about the pop radio hit which - as far as I understood - got called "Sukiyaki" because we westerners couldn't get the proper Japanese pronunciation of the real title: can someone point me to the words of this song? I can't get any of those old links to work. My one ageing brain cell also tells me that the song's name said something about holding your head high so the tears don't run down, but I can't say where that notion came from. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Sukiyake From: sapper82 Date: 25 May 08 - 04:43 PM It was only called Sukiyake because an American record producer didn't think the american public would get the real title, "Ue o muite." I loved the record when it was in the UK charts. Brings back a lot of memories. Kyu Sakamoto's death was a tragic loss. |
