I am looking for the recording Burl Ives did of the Gospel number, "Were you there". I strongly believe it is out of print & wondered if any of you have it. I would gladly settle for a cassette copy of it. Thanks, Charcloth

I'm not sure about that title, but there are a lot of Burl Ives' recordings available on CD here.

I used to have an EP with Paul Robeson singing it.

I have Josh White's version of it, which I always thought was the definitive one. I digitised it from the LP so have it on my iTunes.

cheers, Terry

are you sure it was Burl Ives? Tennessee Ernie Ford of that era did a bunch of gospel stuff....I don't think I ever herad Burl do gospel.

well, I stand (or sit, in this case) corrected...Burl did record a gospel album and 2-3 Christmas albums, but that song is not listed.

Tennesee Ernie, though, did record it.

Johnny Cash also recorded this song. It can be found on the 3 cd set "The Essential Johnny Cash (1955-1983)" which is quite common on eBay. It is about the right amount of Johnny Cash for the average household.
