Subject: Easter Rabbit - how a hen became a hare From: GUEST,Stewart Date: 28 Mar 02 - 08:05 PM Here's an Easter song I learned from from my friend Paddy Graber in Vancouver, B.C. EASTER RABBIT: THE HEN WHO BECAME A HARE By Paddy Graber "When my children were quite small, kindergarten or grade one, Eileen and Kevin came to me and they said, 'Can you write us a song for our Easter concert at school?' And I thought to myself , what does a nice Jewish boy know about Easter. And I thought for a while, and this business about chocolate eggs laid by rabbits, there had to be some folklore attached to that. So this is the song that I put together for them." Come all ye little children dear, come listen to my song I'll sing for you an Easter tale, I will not keep you long It's all about a little hen I head me mother say This little hen laid chocolate eggs for resurrection day But the hen she would not lay at home, but laid out in the field The children came from miles around to find what she would yield Their happy laugh and joyful song, you'd hear it everywhere Oh there hadn't been a better time since last year at Polk Fair But there's a little woman on the hill and she was very mean 'Cause children loved the little hen, with envy she turned green She searched a book of evil spells and solemnly did swear That she would change this little hen into a big white hare But the little hen kept laying eggs, so many did she need That when her feathers turned to fur, the change she did not heed Her little heart was filled with love, and children they had fun She didn't know she was a hare, or that evil had been done The leprechauns they took her hand, they came from everywhere King Brian brought his fairy host to see the big white hare The little children stood around as Brian took the floor Said he, "The hare is one of us and will live forever more." So come all ye little children dear, pray list' to what I say Remember when ye search for eggs on resurrection day That love will always conquer hate, so be as free as air And do what 'er you feel is right, like the hen that became a hare "Well now, if ever you go out collecting eggs for Easter Sunday, you'll know for sure, and how they came to be. And why, in fact, rabbits lay chocolate eggs." Here's an Easter song I learned from Paddy Graber in Vancouver, B.C. Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Easter Rabbit - how a hen became a hare From: CapriUni Date: 29 Mar 02 - 05:30 PM I guess this is nearly the opposite of the fate of Little Bunny Fu Fu: Hen today and Hare tomorrow! *BG" (okay, so it doesn't quite work... might work better if it was a loon that laid the chocolate eggs) Um... okay, I'll get my coat... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Easter Rabbit - how a hen became a hare From: vectis Date: 29 Mar 02 - 09:19 PM This is, of course, a load of cobblers. The hare of spring and fertility was conscripted at some point in history into a cutesy wutest spewstsy wabbit. Until then the hare, and easter with its eggs and crucified man were nothing to the people of the islands near Europe. The yanks always hijack symbols and always get it wrong. It's a talent they have. This is a Jutish/celtic/pagan viewpoint and does not necessarily reflect the beliefs of the majority. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Easter Rabbit - how a hen became a hare From: CapriUni Date: 29 Mar 02 - 10:59 PM Vectis, you wrote: Until then the hare, and easter with its eggs and crucified man were nothing to the people of the islands near Europe. I don't think you meant that the hare and eggs were nothing to the people, did you? After all, both the Hare and eggs were sacred to the Goddess of spring and fertility, which the ancient Germanic peoples called Eostra. And, like the one that later came to be called Jesus the Christ, the moon dies (goes dark) for three nights and is reborn (there is some archeological and folkloric evidence that once upon a time in Europe the moon was seen as the God, and the sun as the Goddess). So it's rather like it is at Christmas/Yule (and one of the reasons the old symbols are still enduring): Pagans and Christians are basically celebrating the same things, just using different words. But all this scholastic/folkloric palaver doesn't take away from the fact that Stewart wrote a very imaginative, musical and creative song/story for the small children of today (that is way better than "Here comes Peter Cottontail"!). |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Easter Rabbit - how a hen became a hare From: Genie Date: 30 Mar 02 - 02:47 PM Capri, as Stewart pointed out in the introductory post, Paddy Graber wrote the song. Thanks for posting Paddy's song, Stewart! Like all of Paddy's stuff, it's great. Paddy, if you're reading this, don't forget that there was another Jewish guy who did all right when it came to writing secular Easter [and Christmas] songs. Seems to me his name was Israel Baline [at least before he emigrated from Russia to the US and became Irving Berlin]. Genie |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Easter Rabbit - how a hen became a hare From: Genie Date: 30 Mar 02 - 05:46 PM I know how that goes, Capri. Sometimes when I read posts I've made about 3:00AM, I'm utterly amazed at how incoherent they can be [sometimes from cutting and pasting and then not proofreading]. Join the club! Genie |
