Subject: RE: A drink and a tune for Brother Chadwick. From: Doug Chadwick Date: 26 Mar 02 - 05:00 PM A drink you say? I'll have a brown and bitter if you can find a pub that still sells 1/2 pint bottles of brown ale. What are my musical tastes? Too much of everything to be good at anything really. I have a couple of guitars, a tenor banjo, mandolin, fiddle, concertina, harmonica, whistle, ocarina and a piano. I am currently trying to persuade my better half that I NEED a 5-string banjo. Of the above, I can only claim to be proficient at the guitar but I am making great efforts to learn the fiddle and have started going to a local fiddle club. I play the mandolin at local sessions but am still trying to learn the tunes. I also sing a little, taking my turn at sing-a-rounds and running Scout campfires. I've written a few songs and had them performed in public so I'll probably pursue that line. Apart from folk music, I have a particular passion for ragtime and like to dip my toe in the jazz world. I quite enjoy searching out songs that have well known choruses but the verses have been all but forgotten. This can be frustrating as I often end up with the words but no tune. Re-reading this posting, perhaps it should have been attached to "what do mudcatters play" Doug

You've got some neat and varied tastes and I think you can find folks to satisfy them all around here. again, welcome and the next round is on............uh, Larry. Spaw |

Subject: RE: A drink and a tune for Brother Chadwick. From: Banjer Date: 26 Mar 02 - 06:59 PM I have a couple of guitars, a tenor banjo, mandolin, fiddle, concertina, harmonica, whistle, ocarina and a piano. I am currently trying to persuade my better half that I NEED a 5-string banjo. How did you accumulate all those instruments and never run upon a five string banjo? You poor deprived person! Having gone this far in life and not owning a fivestring! Perhaps you could get a five string banjo for you wife? (If you do find someone willing to make such a trade, see what else they have they want to trade for. Maybe I can get something for my wife also!!) |

Our Doug started a thread that got everybody venting their spleen and getting quite vehement in their opinions as to what the forum should or shouldn't be, but now he's inspired another that reallyis what the forum is all about - music and friendship - good on yer Doug! |

Subject: RE: A drink and a tune for Brother Chadwick. From: SharonA Date: 27 Mar 02 - 12:04 PM Thanks to Noreen for providing the link from the "stick to the point" thread to this one. Sorry to arrive at the party so late, Doug (damn, I missed seeing Larry and Spaw dancing on the tables!). Running Scout campfire sings, eh? Yeah, I can see where dropping a black pick among the leaves could be a problem. At least you can find the holographic mylar ones with a flashlight! And I don't understand why there's any QUESTION that you need a 5-string banjo! Whaddaya supposed to do, fake it with the tenor banjo? Not! :^) |

Subject: RE: A drink and a tune for Brother Chadwick. From: Doug Chadwick Date: 27 Mar 02 - 03:14 PM "......Will you be in Lancaster for the Maritime Festival this Easter.....?" I'm afraid not. I'll be on the other side of the country and will probably have a hot date with a lawnmower or some other interesting task. On the 5-string banjo front, I've temporarily re-strung one of my guitars and proved that I could make use of yet another instrument. The main problem is dipping once again into the pot that's supposed to be for replacing the rotting windows, just to fund another one of my hobbies. Hey ! I'm about to start some serious thread creep but my name's in the thread so what the hell!! "....Running Scout campfire sings, eh? Yeah, I can see where dropping a black pick among the leaves could be a problem......" I very rarely use instruments at campfires. Sitting around a small fire, late into the night, picking and strumming with a few friends – nothing could be nicer. But when you get the more organised events with upwards of 60 people, you need a decent sized fire which a little hazardous for delicate wooden instruments. Also, as they tend to start at dusk, there's always the possibility of someone standing on your treasured possession in the dark. Campfires, especially for the younger audience, tend to have a lot of action songs and it helps to have your hands free for beating time and encouraging those sitting in front, behind and to both sides of you to join in. The majority of those attending campfires are there because it's a camp activity and may well not be experienced singers. You obviously have some sort of control and influence if you're leading a song but the key is sometimes decided by consensus, especially if your inviting contributions for the verses. You may start playing in G while everyone's signing in C sharp and a half. Anyway, one guitar may not be much use when singing rounds split into four parts, each starting half a line apart. The best instrument I've heard at large campfire was a tambourine. |
