Subject: Definitive Burma Shave From: Amos Date: 25 Mar 02 - 11:39 AM Shades of Howdfy Doody, Buffalo Bob!! And also Goasharootie!! For those of you who remember riding in the back seat of an overstuffed Plymouth, Nash, or similar and playing "Read the Burma Shave sign" on family trips, the definitive collection of Burma Shave signs can be found here. It's a sub-page of the Fifties Web, a wonderful source for nostalgia about fashions, Elvis, slang and Hit Parade Lists from the era. Regards, Amos |

Subject: RE: BS: Definitive Burma Shave From: JohnInKansas Date: 26 Mar 02 - 07:46 PM It may be noted that Farm Co-ops in some places have been putting up (or encouraging "members" to put up) "Burma Shave" style poem signs recently - most often to protest littering. I've seen them most often in Oklahoma, but I suspect the practice is more widespread than that. Good things never die.(?) John |

Mostly as you guys are obviously older than I am, as I have no recollection of actually *seeing* a burma shave ad. ;D :::snicker!:::

I never saw Stinker Stataions in Texas, Louisiana or Arkansas while growing up, but I saw one in Idaho (Moscow I think) about 10 years ago that I'll never forget. It had a pole sign with the skunk on it and the marquee with movable letters had this message: "If you pass us you've passed gas" LTCOML! happy Passover and Easter to all who observe them michael |

Subject: RE: BS: Definitive Burma Shave From: Knitpick Date: 27 Mar 02 - 12:43 AM My favorite Stinker Station gag was (in the New Mexico desert, miles from anywhere) "emergency rest rooms, 5 miles." "emergency rest rooms, 2 miles" "emergency rest rooms, 1 mile" "emergency rest rooms, 1/4 mile" ... and "emergency rest rooms" posted above a pair of 50-gallon oil drums, one of which had painted white lace around the top! Subject: RE: BS: Definitive Burma Shave From: rangeroger Date: 27 Mar 02 - 01:22 AM The Stinker station in Kellogg,Idaho (2 miles east of me) closed only a few years ago. It was too expensive to change out the underground tanks,so now it's a used car dealer and u-haul rental. Having crossed the US in 1955 ( 6 of us in 1952 Pontiac) and again in 1962 ( 1960 Mercedes this time) I too fondly remember the Burma Shave signs. There was a set on Otay Valley road east of San Diego that lasted into the '80s. rr |
