Subject: Erin's Flag
From: John in Hamilton
Date: 21 Mar 02 - 01:55 AM

Hi, a friend played me a song by the name of "Erin's Flag", and he wanted to know all of the lyric. I suspect its a bit of a "rebel song" but I'm not attempting to ruffle the feathers of thr Orange or Green. I believe it was recorded by the "Wolfe Tones". It starts"Give me the flag of Ireland boys..." Any suggestions would be helpful,

Cheers,

John

Found here.

ERIN'S FLAG

Give [G] me the flag of [D] Ireland boys, let [G] Irish [C] breezes [G] blow
Around it blows fervent [C] eyes, [D] defiance to the hold (?)
Let no one weep for true men [C] fought to [D] make their country [C] free
The flag [Am] that James [D] Connelly loved is [G] good [C] enough for [G] me

Give me the flag of Munster boys, to victory lead us on
From rebel Cork, of Kerry boys, of Claireman carry on
Tell them in Tipperary town, the North will yet be free
The flag that Munster heroes loved is good enough for me

Give me the flag of Connaught boys and westward let her blow
Give me the flying columns and Tom Lumpert and the Gaul (?)
God be with ancient Galway land, your sons of victory
The flag that volunteers did love is good enough for me

Give me the flag of Ulster boys, for that's Ireland's flag also
We love them yet and we won't forget Red Hugh and Owen Gold (?)
For soon there breathes on Irish soil the soul of liberty
The flag that Ireland's martyrs loved is good enough for me

Thanks for your reply. The Owen "Gold" probably refers to Owen Roe O'neill. I'm not sure about the "Tom Lumpert" bit, though...

Slainte,

John

I learned this version of the song many years ago. This version mentioned 4 men who were executed by a Free State Firing Squad for their part in occupying the Four Courts in Dublin during the civil war .
. Unfortunately at the moment I cannot recall all the words to one of the verses. I also think the sequence of verses went Leinster, Connaught, Munster, Ulster and the last verse was 'Give me the flag of Ireland" etc. If the words come back to me I will post them later.

ERIN'S FLAG

Give me the flag of Ireland boys
Let Irish breezes blow
Around it's folds wherere it flies
Defiant to the foe
Let no man weep where brave men fought
To make their country free
For the flag the volunteers have loved
Is good enough for me

Give me the flag of Munster boys,
to victory lead us on
Of Rebel Cork and Kerry and of Clare and Garryowen
Tell them in Tipperary that the north will yet be free
For the flag that Rory O'Connor loved
Is good enough for me

Give me the flag of Connaught boys and westward let her go
To meet the flying columns that from Longford swept the foe
God keep you ancient Galway
May your sons be ever free
The flag that Richard Barrett loved
Is good enough for me

Give me the flag of Ulster boys, that's Ireland's flag also
We love them yet and we won't forget Red Hugh and Owen Roe
While still there breathes on Irish soil the soul of liberty
The flag young Joe McKelvey loved
is good enough for me

Give me the flag of Leinster boys
..............
....................
etc
The flag the Liam Mellows loved
Is good enough for me.

Sorry to butt in, but I thought I'd renew a request for Bold Doherty lyrics from last year. Any chance that you might be able to help my out there?

Thank you in advance Milton Shoup

Another "Erin's Flag" from HERE.

Erin's Flag

Unroll Erin's flag! fling its folds to the breeze!
Let it float o'er the land, let it flash o'er the seas!
Lift it out of the dust-let it wave as of yore,
When its chiefs with their clans stood around it and swore
That never! no, never! while God gave them life,
And they had an arm and a sword for the strife,
That never! no, never! that banner should yield
As long as the heart of a Celt was its shield:
While the hand of a Celt had a weapon to wield
And his last drop of blood was unshed on the field.

Lift it up! wave it high! 'tis as bright as of old!
Not a stain on its green, not a blot on its gold,
Tho' the woes and the wrongs of three hundred long years
Have drenched Erin's sunburst with blood and with tears!
Though the clouds of oppression enshroud it in gloom,
And around it the thunders of Tyranny boom.
Look aloft! look aloft! lo! the clouds drifting by,
There's a gleam through the gloom, there's a light in the sky,
'Tis the sunburst resplendent - far, flashing on high!
Erin's dark night is waning, her day-dawn is nigh!

Lift is up! lift it up! the old Banner of Green!
The blood of its sons has but brightened its sheen;
What though the tyrant has trampled it down,
Are its folds not emblazoned with deeds of renown?
What though for ages it droops in the dust,
Shall it droop thus forever? No, no! God is just!
Take it up! take it up! from the tyrant's foul tread,
Let him tear the Green Flag - we will snatch its last shred,
And beneath it we'll bleed as our forefathers bled,
And we'll vow by the dust in the graves of our dead,
And we'll swear by the blood which the Briton has shed,
And we'll vow by the wrecks which through Erin he spread,
And we'll swear by the thousands who, famished, unfed,
Died down in the ditches, wild-howling for bread;
And we'll vow by our heroes, whose spirits have fled,
And we'll swear by the bones in each coffinless bed,
That we'll battle the Briton through danger and dread;
That we'll cling to the cause which we glory to wed,
'Til the gleam of our steel and the shock of our lead
Shall prove to our foe that we meant what we said -
That we'll lift up the green, and we'll tear down the red!

Lift up the Green Flag! oh! it wants to go home,
Full long has its lot been to wander and roam,
It has followed the fate of its sons o'er the world,
But its folds, like their hopes, are not faded nor furled;
Like a weary-winged bird, to the East and the West,
It has flitted and fled - but it never shall rest,
'Til, pluming its pinions, it sweeps o'er the main,
And speeds to the shores of its old home again,
Where its fetterless folds o'er each mountain and plain
Shall wave with a glory that never shall wane.

Take it up! take it up! bear it back from afar!
That banner must blaze 'mid the lightnings of war;
Lay your hands on its folds, lift your gaze to the sky,
And swear that you'll bear it triumphant or die,
And shout to the clans scattered far o'er the earth
To join in the march to the land of their birth;
And wherever the Exiles, 'neath heaven's broad dome,
Have been fated to suffer, to sorrow and roam,
They'll bound on the sea, and away o'er the foam,
They'll sail to the music of "Home, Sweet Home!"

~Masato

Masato, That Erin`s Flag is from Gills Irish Recitier [circa 1900]. It was written by Rev Abram J. Ryan, I don`t believe there was ever any music composed for this Poem. Ard Mhacha.

Ard Mhacha, thanks. Since it's in a "Liederbuch", I thought it's a song.

Here is another little snippet to the last verse I posted earlier.
Hopefully the remaining line will come soon.

Give me the flag of Leinster boys
She sheds her sword of light
And the fearless men of Dublin .............. .................... etc The flag the Liam Mellows loved Is good enough for me.

Jimmy C, I have a recording of this song from the late 1960s, but the Leinster verse is not included. The Ulster Verse finishes, "The flag that Ulster heroes loved is good enough for me" and likewise the same ending for for Munster and Connaught. Ard Mhacha

Ard Mhaca, I knew this song as a boy, and the rest will come back to me , soon I hope. I imagine that the words have been changed to reflect the feelings of the singer, much like some singers insert Cathal Brugha in place of De Valera in one verse of the Foggy Dew. It's still a pretty good song.

slan.
