Apparently a Star Trek episode dealt with the N Ireland question in one of it's episodes when Captain Kirk revealed that Irish Reunification had been completed in 2025. The episode has never been shown in Britain.

Perhaps you were in England when that episode was shown. Or, perhaps you were in a shift / rift / vortex / tear / parallel continuum / plasma / dynamic / universe. I only saw a couple of episodes of each series, so I'm not up to speed on space jargon.

Yes, I think it's true. I think there was also an episode that predicted an American President would have his hat blown several times in the late '90's as well. The really chilling one though predicted that people in the year 2002 would actually give a shit about a badly acted 30 year old piece of tripe that was, if any, only marginally better than "My Mother, The Car." That episode really scared the bejesus out of me!

Well, you're partially right Red Eye.

The episode in question is 'The High Ground' but it comes from The Next Generation series.

It wasn't shown by the BBC, but it has been shown in Britain on Sky TV.

yeah, I had a feeling it was New Trek rather than Old Trek. Sounded vaguely familiar.

But about the phrase I never knew that ... I am always amazed when a student writes that in their little chapter reflections I require them to hand in every week. I mean, why take the class if thought you already knew everything? Why are people surprised when a teacher or professor presents information not already known???!?

Mrrzy: You should know by now: Students don't take courses to learn things. They take courses to accumulate credits, to get a degree, to get a high(er) paying job.

If they wanted to learn things, they'd read books.

You'll know it when you have a student that actually wants to learn. He'll take very few notes, but pay close attention and ask lots of questions, some of which take you off your planned topic. They will usually start with "how" or "why." He is unlikely to show any surprise.

saying" i never knew that" is actually quite a subtle psychological ploy. the person you're saying it to thinks they are being thanked for the information, or complimented on their superior knowledge. but what you're really saying is "it's kind of surprising i didn't know that, as I know virtually everything there is to be known, and anyway it wasn't very interesting'.

I totally disagree, Greg.

To me, saying "I never knew that" is an admission of inadequacy. I am admitting that I should have know it, that it is worth knowing, and thank you for telling me.

While we are on a Star Trek subject, let me mention something that I believe needs to be mentioned...William Shatner. A great actor, wonderful singer, a fine philantrophist, sweet humanitarian...hell, the list goes on! He also has fine horses!

And, as mentioned on another thread; he and Dylan worked on an album together. Unfortunately never released, it would have shaken music to its core!

This poor world needs more Shatners, but alas, there is, and there can only be, one William Shatner!

The only Irish connection I recall from the original series was the episode in which Kirk's academy nemesis named Finnegan shows up, picking up where he left off by pummeling and harassing Kirk no end. Talk about stereotyping, Yeesh. At least Finnegan wasn't portrayed as a drunk.

Mrzzy, you gave me a severe dose of deja vu! I taught labs and assisted in lectures in Geology when I was getting my advanced degrees. Some students questioned my ability to teach because I said that my answers to some of their questions were speculations and not the one true genuine "Truth." These are the same people who now believe their local legislative representative, etc.
When I hear people say "I should have known that," my response is "Hmmm."

Now has anybody got the facts about why the word "gullible" is never included in any dictioaries?

You're right. I have 3 dictioaries here, and not one of them has the word "gullible" in it! Shocking.

Quite aside from that, Finnegan actually was a drunk, but he had no drink available on that occasion, and this only further contibuted to his already totally obnoxious nature. He very nearly managed to humiliate our beloved James T, but Kirk triumphed in the end...as he always does...pummeling the pest into insensibility.

Kirk's shirt was duly ripped in the process, sending legions of female fans into breathless rapture, and stirring envy in the hearts of all redblooded male humaniods.

An enrollment in the WSSBA will ensure that you will soon know a whole bunch of vital information that most other people don't know or even care about! This will enable you to be "the life of the party" and impress the hell out of the poor sods who haven't memorized Klingon phrases like "P'THAK CHARGH GROPHK!"*

First of all, I don't think canyon produce echoes; ducks do. And secondly, I don't believe any of you when you say "gullible" isn't in the dictioary. I don't think you've read the whole thing. Just cause it's not in its alphabetical place don't mean it ain't in there.

Have you ever seen an elephant pee It does it for an hour and a quarter
And you can't see it's belly for steam

And for an unrequested encore Q "How long is piece of string?" A Approximately two times half it length, that's if the theory of relativity is all its cracked up to be.

Visitors to that newly renamed London attraction, the Regents Animal Park, may well be disappointed when they look for the elephants peeing - they'll have to go to Whipsnade for that, nowadays.

Piss poor show, I reckon!

I await with breath unbated to hear of the Doctor Who episode that foreshadowed the demise of Enron.

Yes Gullible is in the dictionary, and no, I don't think I've been 'had' in taking a minute to look it up. Unfortunately it does not usually 'head' an entry, and can be found in the entry for "Gull" meaning a dupe.

Be careful passing these ducks around, if you hold them upside down they quack up!!
