Subject: RE: HELP: Best way to learn guitar. From: Clinton Hammond Date: 16 Feb 02 - 01:52 PM Jez... also, keep in touch... I think I might have some old chord books kicking around... I'd also recommend checking out The TAB section has alphabetical listings of all kinds of music... that way he can look up song by people he likes and learn them... Best of luck eh! |

Subject: RE: HELP: Best way to learn guitar. From: Benjamin Date: 16 Feb 02 - 02:11 PM I've found that the best way is private lessons. Though if neither of you can afford a book, I'm not sure how you will aford those. Still, books and videos in my experience provide knowledge where a teacher can show how it's applied. |

Subject: RE: HELP: Best way to learn guitar. From: GUEST,spielman37@yahoo.com Date: 17 Feb 02 - 10:49 AM Best way to learn the guitar.......PRACTICE!!!!!!!!!!! I was given a guitar in Jr. High School and didn't have much to do after school except practice the guitar. (You didn't think I was going to do my homework, did you?) Anyway, with hours of practice and a Mel Bay chord Beginner guitar book, I was playing fairly well after about 6 months. Hope that helps. |

Subject: RE: HELP: Best way to learn guitar. From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 17 Feb 02 - 11:11 AM Hi Jez, Mudcat member harpmaker is a music teacher, and I reckon a very good one.He has been working in music all his life, he makes instruments (mainly harps), teaches all string instruments and has his own recording studios.I am getting mandolin lessons off him, he is a good bloke (i have known him 2 or 3 years). If you can't afford lessons yet, send him a PM anyway, I am sure he will pass on a few good tips. |

Subject: RE: HELP: Best way to learn guitar. From: Grab Date: 17 Feb 02 - 02:07 PM At least to start with, books are the best way. Not too expensive - £5-6 each over here - so if he bugs you then pick something he does which costs money and hold off on £6 of that. It's only a couple of videos/computer games rented, one paperback book, half a CD... I used the Russ Shipton books. They're OK - nothing special, but they do feature folksongs. Whatever you do, do NOT buy any book about how to play the electric guitar, blues, etc - these are, without a single exception I've seen so far, useless for learning as a beginner. Make him learn on the classical. Graham. |

Subject: RE: HELP: Best way to learn guitar. From: Hilary Date: 17 Feb 02 - 06:51 PM What the others said, plus most uk libraries have music sections with both songboks and 'how to' books. If you do think about professional lessons, best check it's someone who really understands the kinds of music that's of interest, as well someone who can actually teach. All the sessions I go to, most players are happy to give you a few pointers. The only downside is if they've been playing 20/30 years may have forgotten the very basics & blind you wih science. Oh - if he's right handed - don't ask a left-hander to demonstrate anything ( & vice versa). I've tried it - it's just one complication too many. Have fun, Hilary |

Subject: RE: HELP: Best way to learn guitar. From: Bobert Date: 17 Feb 02 - 09:10 PM Yo, JeZe. From the sound of things, money is tight BUT...there's always a but... if Chris2 is going to stck with it, you're going to have to spend 6 bucks on a set of new strings fir the acoustic. Four year old strings aren't going to cut it. A ten buck tuner wouldn't hurt either and it sound like lots of folks have all ready handled the chord thing. Last unsolicited suggestion: if Chris2 would like to sing, check out the "Songs with 2 chords" thread. This will keep Chris2's mind off the pain that goes along with learning to play guitar. It really does work. Good luck to you both... |

Subject: RE: HELP: Best way to learn guitar. From: Kaleea Date: 18 Feb 02 - 01:53 AM If one has a good background in music, and is very disciplined, then one might be able to get a good guitar book, and work one's way through the lessons. However, the best way to learn to play any instrument is to find a good professional teacher. A good guitar instructor is one who will teach you to play in a variety of styles and make you learn the scales, too! For example, I always have students learning to read notes (as in melodies), as well as playing chords, and then I take them into arpeggio style plucking of the strings with the fingers, and I also like to introduce the students to the blues & some basic blues licks. If I teach the student the basic techniques of the instrument, then the student will have a well grounded base upon which to choose his or her own style. Many come into the studio wanting to play like so & so, but I only accept acoustic guitars & they have to be willing to learn the basics, and practice regularly! I also include my guitar students in my regular recitals along with all the other students (ie, piano, voice, flute, etc) so that they are required to perform as part of their education. |

Subject: RE: HELP: Best way to learn guitar. From: RichM Date: 18 Feb 02 - 08:16 AM ...Play every day. Even for just a few minutes Listen... to your own playing, to the sound of the guitar, to the different tones as you go up the neck Don't be afraid to explore: the fingerboard, different styles, a song or tune you hear on the radio or from another player Ask! :if you hear another guitarist do something you like, ask them how they do it---even if it's too complex for you now Find other musician's at your level, or just ahead of you to jam with Listen to other instruments too--- and try to imitate sounds/melodies/licks that catch your attention Find the joy, the pleasure in what you are playing each day---make an effort NOT to let practice bore you Rich McCarthy

Subject: RE: HELP: Best way to learn guitar. From: JedMarum Date: 18 Feb 02 - 09:34 AM It's already been said here, but I've gotta second it; find yourselves a good teacher, take lessons and work, work, work! There is no short cut to doing your homework. Music is wonderful fun, and it can be really enjoyable to practice for hours and hours each week - but ya gotta do your homework. I thank God every day for the effort I put into practice every day as a kid. It was fun, but I did work at it. By the way, if you find a teacher that doesn't work out ... then try another. A good teacher is so important to getting a good start. |

Subject: RE: HELP: Best way to learn guitar. From: 53 Date: 18 Feb 02 - 12:32 PM Just like everybody else has said, practice is the name of the game. Then take what you learn in your practice time, and turn it into fun as you gradually learn to play, always leave your session on a good note, and you'll be sure to come back to it. |

Subject: RE: HELP: Best way to learn guitar. From: JeZeBeL Date: 18 Feb 02 - 02:13 PM Thanks for all the advice everyone. You're all really helpful. I self taught myself guitar, back when I was 14, cos I wanted to play music like Nivarna and Metallica...how impressionable I was. I fell down on it though. When it came to GCSE's I concentrated souly on my trumpet as that was what I had been taught since the age of 10. 2 hrs practice a day. God I hated it. But as they say practice makes perfect, and I don't regret it one bit. I dropped it when I went to uni cos there was nowhere to play and started with folk music. Now I play both and realise what I've missed out on those couple of years. I practice all my instruments every day...and I don't hate it cos I know you need to. I actually enjoy it now. The only thing I don't play anymore is the guitar. I forgot the chords. I'll treat him to a new set of strings and a guitar book. VERY early birthday pressie I guess. He really want's to learn, and I understand the compostion of chords and all the other stuff. I just can't remember the blasted things!! Maybe I'll buy him a couple of lessons with Ian Stephenson for his birthday if it looks like he's going to stick at it. I'll also check out all those sites and print him some stuff off. I can then teach him how to read music and tab. I know it's good to play bt ear, but you can't just strum chords all your life I guess. So he HAS to learn to read the stuff. I won't let him have any choice in the matter. I used to teach trumpet....and I CAN be an evil music teacher if I wanna be!! lol!! JeZ |

Subject: RE: HELP: Best way to learn guitar. From: M.Ted Date: 18 Feb 02 - 05:44 PM Get him lessons with someone who is a competent teacher--giving somebody a stack of books, links, and the whole thing just makes it confusing---self taught players tend not to learn the basics properly, making progress slow--self-taught is the hard way, and most don't make it--a teacher will get you there, faster and better-- |
